THE DIESEL ENGINE IS MOST EFFCIENT PRIME MOVER

One of the fields of applications of Diesel engines is in motor-ships. Ships which go on long voyages rarely calling at a port for refueling(1) must carry a large store of fuel, which naturally takes up a great deal of room that could otherwise be used for cargo. The-refore, the most efficient prime mover wins because less fuel is needed. Diesel engines also take up less room than the boilers and turbines and condensers(2) of a steam power plant for ships. But a complete steam plant is cheaper than equivalent Diesel engines and the-refore, before deciding, one must compare the higher first cost of Diesel engines with their reduced fuel cost and see if the saving in the long run(3) is big enough.

The first passenger ship built in Great Britain with an alternating-current supply for all auxiliary services was launched on the Tyne. DIESEL-ELEKTRIK SHIP “RUSSIA”

Electrical installation

The ship’s network is designed for alternating current at a maximum voltage of

380 and a frequenecy of between 50 and 40 cicles-for energyzing this circuit, two hight-tension supplies are available, and one low-tension as follows:

a.Directly from the main bus-bars;

b.From the 1,800 generating set directly;

c.From the emergency Diesel-generating sets.

The high-tension supply is stepped down to a lower voltage by means of transformers, of which two of 700 KW, one of 600 KW and one of 100 KW capasity are provided. They latter units are regulating transformers, and are used in the heating and lighting circuits to prevent flickering. Depending on the speed of the generators, they frequency can vary between 50 and 40 cycles, and they voltage between 380 and 220.

The garbage holding and oil spill recovery vessel is intended primarily for removing oil spill and litter floating in harbours. The American specialists opinion is that the garbage and oil spill recovery vessel can be «the clue to resolving the problem of eliminating the oil overflows».

SOME PRACTICAL INFORMATION

The armature.- The armature is the heart of d.c. motor. Through it flows the main line current , and , if the machine is overloaded, the armature is the first to give evidence of distress . If it does give trouble , the repair should be entrusted only to a competent person.

In handling , observe the following points:

1.Don`t roll the armature about the floor. A coil may be injured; a band may be nicked.

2.Support or lift the armature only by its shaft. Otherwise , use a wide lifting belt under the core.

3.Never allow its weight to rest on the commutator or coils.

Preserving the Winding-Periodic varnish and baking treatment will prolong the the life of the winding. First , however , clean the winding thoroughly with a solvent solution to remove grease and other dirt , and then:

1.Inspect coil bands , replacing any that are loose

2.Pre-heat armature in an over at from 85 to 100 C.

3.Keep the varnish at the viscosity recommended by the varnish manufacturer.

4.Immerse the armature endwise-commutator end up. Allow to drain well before baking.

5.Bake also on end; this will avoid varnish up on one side , which may result in an out-of-balance condition when put into operation.

Resources-saving technology for testing ships electric power plant

The technology has been developed for testing and adjusting the ships electric power plants under both static and dynamic conditions.

The technology is noted for useful utilization of power produced by the ships electric power plant, it helps to make the all-round assessment of the generation sets serviceability characteristics as quoted by the Register of the Russia, the voltage and frequency control at nominal(or partial) loads, the voltage and frequency automatic control systems operation at nominal or partial load and with the sudden load change, proportionality of resistive and reaction distribution among the parallel-operating sets, settings and operate time of automation devices and of the generator sets protection.

For carrying out the test, it is necessary to provide, the resistive load automatic stabililizator system, the remote control and remote-control units to ensure the ships electric power test modem control when operating to the industrial power mains.
