сharacteristic-отличительная черта, особенность
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
1. The USA is a country of great differences. At the same time it has surprising similarities. The differences are partly a result of the geography. The United States are a country of great contrasts in landscape, climate and even the way of living because the nation occupies nearly half of a continent.
2. There can be found high mountains and the flattest of prairies, tropical heat and arctic cold, fertile valleys and desert areas. All sorts of products are raised, and there are industries of every kind.
3. Each region of the United States has characteristics of its own. There are large and modern cities, but a great proportion of the country consists of open land with farm-houses and small towns. In spite of this, however, and in spite of the size of the country, there are striking uniformities in the American scene.
4. The capital of the USA is the city of Washington called after the first President of the United States, General George Washington. It is like no other city of the USA. The flag of the USA, the "stars and stripes", has 50 stars on a blue background. Each of these stars represents one of the fifty states. But the city of Washington is not in any of those states.Washington is situated in the District of Columbia which is outside the jurisdiction of any state and subject only to the control of the Federal Congress.
5. Most of the well-to-do white people live outside the city and blacks who make up half the population of Washington are the main city dwellers. Washington is often called the city of the underprivileged blacks.

THE BRITISH MUSEUM
1. The British Museum, comprising the national museum of archaeology and ethnography and the national library ,is the largest and richest of its kind in the world.Built in the middle of the last century, it is situated in Bloomsbury, a district in central London.
2. Anthony Panizzi designed the plans for the construction of the famous circular Reading Room at the British Museum; and it occupies the site of the former interior courtyard. The domed roof of the Reading Room is forty-seven metres in diameter.
3. The first thing which strikes a visitor on entering the Reading Room is its unusual shape. It is a perfect circle. The superintendent and his assistants sit in the centre of the room and they issue and collect books. The catalogues are kept in a slightly larger circular space behind them, and from this circumference of catalogues, long rows of reading desks radiate to the outer walls, like the spokes of a wheel.
4. The British Museum has an enormous range of galleries, but they no longer contain the objects relating to natural history which formed such an important part of the original bequest. These are now housed in another museum. The British Museum contains books and manuscripts: Greek, Roman, West Asiatic and British, as well as oriental antiquities. It has a department of ethnography. Ethnography is concerned with primitive peoples and their cultures in various stages of development as revealed by their tools, ritual objects and various crafts. This collection is so vast that only a tiny percentage is on show to the general public. Then there is a department of prints and drawings. There are also departments devoted to maps, coins and metals. Visitors interested in horology can see a fascinating array of clocks and watches. Those who are interested in philately can view a magnificent collection of postage stamps.
