4. Dialogue No 1 “Planning a Holiday”

  • Mary: I suppose it’s time to start thinking about summer holidays again. The papers are full of travel articles.

  • Charles: They always are at this time of the year.

  • Mary: I’d like to go to Spain. The swimming and sunbathing are excellent there.

  • Charles: Personally, I’m quite content with Cornwall.

  • Mary: But you know we go there every year, Charles. It would be nice to go somewhere different.

  • Charles: I’d be quite happy to stay at home and work in the garden. You know I want to make a path. Besides a trip to Spain will be pretty expensive. I’m not sure if we can afford it.

  • Mary (to the Blakes): Have you got any plans yet for holidays this year?

  • Mrs Blake: We haven’t yet decided on our summer holidays but may possibly go up to the Highlands.

  • Paul Blake: I’d like to go somewhere out-of-the-way. Somewhere where there aren’t many tourists.

  • Mrs Blake: I wouldn’t go anywhere out-of-the-way. You may have trouble with the food and water.

  • Paul Blake: I dream of a place where one can rent a cabin by the sea a thousand miles from nowhere.

  • Charles: I feel the same way. At the end of the year of hard work it is important to switch off the resultant nervous strain.

  • Mrs Blake (laughing): Paul would like to hire a submarine and go to the bottom of the Pacific. It’ll be a bit of change down there and no trouble at all. No passports, no customs, no tips, no hotel reservations, no unexpected changes of weather, no postcards to have send home every two days.

  • Mary: And you can stay in bed as late in the mornings.

  • Paul Blake: Talking of staying in bed late in the mornings, I wouldn’t mind spending my holidays at home, for a change. To be able to stay in bed late in the mornings instead of rushing to the hotel dining-hall for breakfast and then rushing on the excursion or special sightseeing trip; to be able to go around in any old clothes; to walk idly about my own town; there is a lot to be said for a simple holiday at home, and last but not least it saves a lot of money.

  • Bobby: Let’s go somewhere really hot this year and get sunburned. It would be also wonderful to go mountaineering, canoeing, camping.

  • Charles: Don’t you like Cornwall? I remember our last holiday there. The weather was flawless and everybody spent most of the day by the sea, in shorts and swimsuits.

  • Bobby: Yes, we made most of our holiday while the good weather lasted. But still I want something different.

  • Mrs Blake: I’ve always heard there are some beautiful spots in Scotland.

  • Mary: Oh, there are. And especially if you like mountains, Scotland is a place for you.

  • Charles: Well, I wonder where we’ll all be in another couple of months’ time.

Dialogue No 2 “Planning a Holiday”

Sonya: Hello, Alice. Haven’t seen you for ages! I'm so glad to see you!

Alice: So I'm. How are you?

Sonya: Fine, thanks. And what's new with you? You are looking radiantly happy.

Alice: You know, I’ve taken the test in theoretical mechanics and they have passed me in it.

Sonya: Congratulations! I hope you’ll pass all the tests and exams just in time. I also try to do my best not to fail in theoretical mechanics and other subjects.

Alice: Oh, don't worry. I’m sure we’ll pass all the exams, repeat the success and celebrate this great event. Will you come round to my place after your last exam? We’ll arrange a party, enjoy ourselves and talk about sweet plans for holidays. My parents promised me a package tour this summer.

Sonya: I think it’s really great. The academic year is drawing to its close, and it’s time to start thinking about the approaching holidays. Have you made up your mind where to go with your package tour? How do you intend to spend your holidays this year?

Alice: I don’t know for certain but I think I’ll go to Lake Baikal. Last year I went there with my friends and I enjoyed every minute of it. Besides, I want to make the most of my holiday and this region is an ideal place to combine rest and education. My grandfather told me much about the Trans-Siberian railway. He worked at the piece of line (участок железнодорожного пути) of the Circum-Baikal Railway which is called a unique achievement in engineering and is one of the picturesque sights of the area around Lake Baikal. I have always been enthusiastic about travelling there and having a look at its bridges and tunnels.

Sonya: Yes, these railway engineering structures always were the most catching objects to the eye of both tourists and builders. Would you like to see all of them? I mean the 200 bridges and 33 tunnels at the Circum-Baikal Railway?

Alice: Oh, Sonya, please stop your bantering. You know, I really have read much about these structures and want to take pictures of them. And have you made your mind up how to spend holidays this year? Perhaps you could join me?

Sonya: Why not? Thank you for the idea. I wouldn’t mind travelling light — путешествовать налегке with a good companion. I always look forward to my summer holidays because the academic year is so full of stress, of hard work, of being always in a hurry. I think I really deserve being absolutely idle for a while and just relax. In my opinion there is nothing like countryside. I’m all for a simple holiday and wouldn’t mind spending my holidays in the country but I have not decided so far.

Alice: I know a quiet place and I’m sure you will enjoy yourself. Lake Baikal is completely surrounded by the taiga and mountains which rise steeply over the northwestern shore of the lake. This area is protected as a national park and not far from that place there is a holiday complex with small cabins used by holidaymakers. Of cause, they don’t look like chalet ['ʃæleɪ] in the Alps but are quite suitable for the true lovers of nature.

Sonya: I’ll come round to your place after my last exam to chat about your suggestion. And now I have to read up on theoretical mechanics. Success waits on effort. — Успех требует усилий. Bye for now. See you at the university.

Alice: Good luck!
