№ 8 Sightseeing tour around the city

Good day ladies and gentlemen!

Welcome to St.-Petersburg, my native city.

Allow me introduce myself to you. My name is … and I am going to show you the most remarkable placed of interest in our city.

Today St.-Petersburg is the second city in our country in size and importance after Moscow. Its population is about 5 million people.

The city was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as the fortress to defend Russia from enemies and the very first building to be constructed was the Peter and Paul Fortress. Today the fortress is one of St. Petersburg's major tourist attractions and has become the emblem of the city. It is also home to the headquarters of the St. Petersburg City History Museum which displays collections throughout the fortress complex. As years passed by St.-Petersburg grew into a large cultural and industrial city which in 1712 became the capital of Russian Empire.

There are a lot of masterpieces of architecture, famous museums, theatres, remarkable churches and cathedrals in out city. Peter the Great founded the city of St. Petersburg in 1703.

The most famous museum is the Hermitage. It was founded in 1764 as the Residence of the Tzairs and built by architect Rastrelly. Nowadays Hermitage houses occupy several buildings including the Winter Palace, Small, Old and New Hermitages. It is a world-class museum with the priceless collection of masterpieces of art and luxury including applied art, archaeological finds, coins, graphic art, paintings and sculptures. The Alexander Column (Aleksandrovskaia Kolonna ), the focal point of Palace Square, was designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand and built between 1830 and 1834. The monument is 155 feet 8 inches tall and is topped with a statue of an angel holding a cross (the face of the angel is said to be modeled on the face of Emperor Alexander I). The body of the column is made of a single monolith of red granite.

Also I recommend you visit The Mikhailovsky Castle - now a branch of the Russian Museum - is one of the most mysterious buildings in St. Petersburg. It was built between 1797 and1800 for Russia's most enigmatic monarch, Emperor Paul I, is full of unusual and dramatic events. In the early 1990s the castle became a branch of the Russian Museum and now houses its Portrait Gallery, featuring official portraits of the Russian Emperors and Empresses and various dignitaries and celebrities from the late 17th to the early 20th century. There are The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood Cathedral with its unique icons and panels made from majolica and mosaic which were made from drawings by the leading Russian artists of last century, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Kazan Cathedrals situated in the historical centre of St. Petersburg and no doubt worth visiting.

At the end of Nevsky Prospect there is Lavra the main Residence of Orthodox Church which is the masterpiece of Russian architecture. If you have enough time you may visit our famous suburbs such as Petergof and Pushkin.

At the end of our tour I wish the past time in our city were pleasant for you.
