2. Complete this letter to the editor of a newspaper. Use the correct form of the verbs.

Dear Editor:

Cars are essential in today’s society. We need them …………… 1.(get) from place to place. However, ……………2.(drive) is a privilege, not a right. I’m in favour of …………… 3(suspend) licences for serious moving violations. Futhermore, if someone has his or her licence suspended more than once, that person should not be permitted ……………..4.(drive) at all.

I learned…………5(drive) when I was sixteen. I remember ……………….6 (be) very happy when I first got my licence. In fact, my friends and family ven helped celebrate my …………..7(pass) the road test. But my parents cautioned me ……………8(not take) this new responsibility lightly. In order……………...9 (give) me a sense of responsibility, they made me ………….9(pay) my own car insurance from the start. They expected me ……….11(be) more cautious, courteous driver at all times. They insisted on my …….. 12(obey) all regulations.

Some of my friends objected to ………..13(have to) wear seatbelts. The couldn’t stand ………14(feel) “confined”. Seatbelts save lives and help ……………15(prevent) serious injuries. It’s completely irresponsible ………………..16(not use) them, and if my friends refused …………..17(buckle up), I didn’t let them …………18(ride) with me.

I believe that too many people consider ………….19(drive) a sport. Stricter laws, and the enforcement of those laws , will make people……………..20(behave) more carefully on the road., and that, in turn, will result in………………21(save) lives. It’s time …………..22(make) our roads safer.

Sally McKay, Detroit.
