Then he mounted the black-haired steed, which overtook the wind before, and outstripped the wind behind; and rushing on between earth and sky, he never stopped till he came to the beach, where he saw hundreds upon hundreds of kings' sons, and champions, who were anxious to save the king's daughter, but were so frightened at the terrible urfeist that they would not go near her.

When he had seen the princess and the trembling champions (когда он увидел принцессу и трепещущих отважных воинов; to tremble — дрожать,

трястись; трепетать, страшиться, опасаться), Sean Ruadh turned his black steed to the castle (Рыжий Джон повернул своего вороного коня

/обратно/ к замку). Presently the king saw (вскоре король увидел), riding between earth and sky (скачущим между землей и небом), a splendid stranger (великолепного незнакомца), who stopped before him (который остановился перед ним).

Soon the black horseman was before the princess (вскоре черный всадник был = предстал перед принцессой), who was sitting alone on a rock near the sea (которая сидела в одиночестве на скале возле моря). As she looked at the stranger (когда она взглянула на незнакомца), she thought he was the finest man on earth (она подумала, что он был самым прекраснейшим мужчиной на земле; to think /thought/), and her heart was cheered (и сердце ее приободрилось; to cheer — утешиться, ободриться, повеселеть).

Soon the black horseman was before the princess, who was sitting alone on a rock near the sea. As she looked at the stranger, she thought he was the finest man on earth, and her heart was cheered.

"Have you no one to save you (неужели у тебя нет никого, кто бы тебя спас)?" he asked.

"No one (никого)."

"Will you let me lay my head on your lap (ты позволишь мне положить голову тебе на колени; lap — колени /сидящего человека/) till the urfeist comes (до тех пор, пока не явится большой змей)? Then rouse me (тогда разбуди меня)."

"Have you no one to save you?" he asked.

"No one."

"Will you let me lay my head on your lap till the urfeist comes? Then rouse me."

He put his head on her lap and fell asleep (он положил свою голову ей на колени и заснул; asleep — спящий; to fall asleep — заснуть). While he slept (пока он спал; to sleep /slept/), the princess took three hairs from his head (принцесса взяла три волоска с его головы) and hid them in her bosom (и

He put his head on her lap and fell asleep. While he slept, the princess took three hairs from his head and hid them in her bosom. As soon as she had hidden the hairs, she saw the urfeist coming on the sea, great as an island, and throwing up water to the sky as he moved. She roused the stranger, who sprang up to defend her.

The urfeist came upon shore (большой змей вышел на берег моря), and was advancing on the princess (и стал приближаться к принцессе) with mouth open and wide as a bridge (с открытой пастью, шириной с мост: «с

открытым ртом и широким, как мост»), when the stranger stood before him and said (когда незнакомец встал перед ним и сказал),

"This woman is mine, not yours (эта женщина моя, а не твоя)!"

The urfeist came upon shore, and was advancing on the princess with mouth open and wide as a bridge, when the stranger stood before him and said,

"This woman is mine, not yours!"

Then drawing his sword of light (затем, вытащив свой меч света), he swept off the monster's head with a blow (он снес голову чудовищу одним ударом; to sweep /swept/ — мести, подметать; сносить); but the head rushed back to its place (но голова бросилась назад на свое место), and grew on again (и

снова приросла; to grow /grew, grown/).

In a twinkle the urfeist turned and went back to the sea (в мгновение /ока/

большой змей развернулся и двинулся обратно в море; twinkle — мигание;

мгновение, миг, момент); but as he went, he said (но когда он удалялся, = на ходу он сказал), "I'll be here again tomorrow (завтра я снова буду здесь), and swallow the whole world before me as I come (и проглочу целый мир перед собой, когда я буду приближаться)."

Then drawing his sword of light, he swept off the monster's head with a blow; but the head rushed back to its place, and grew on again.

In a twinkle the urfeist turned and went back to the sea; but as he went, he said, "I'll be here again tomorrow, and swallow the whole world before me as I come."

"Well (что ж)," answered the stranger (ответил незнакомец), "maybe another will come to meet you (возможно, кто-нибудь другой придет дать тебе отпор; to meet — встречаться; драться /на дуэли/, сражаться, воевать /со злом, пороками и т.п./)."

Sean Ruadh mounted his black steed (Рыжий Джон вскочил на своего вороного коня), and was gone before the princess could stop him (и был таков прежде, чем принцесса смогла остановить его). Sad was her heart

(печальным было ее сердце) when she saw him rush off between the earth and sky (когда она увидела, как он несется прочь между землей и небом) more swiftly than any wind (обгоняя ветер: «более стремительно, чем любой ветер»; swift — быстрый, скорый, стремительный).

"Well," answered the stranger, "maybe another will come to meet you."

Sean Ruadh mounted his black steed, and was gone before the princess could stop him. Sad was her heart when she saw him rush off between the earth and sky more swiftly than any wind.

Sean Ruadh went to the first giant's castle (Рыжий Джон пошел в дом первого великана) and put away his horse (и вернул коня; to put away —

убирать, прятать), clothes (/снял/ одежду), and sword (и меч). Then he slept on the giant's bed till evening (затем он проспал на кровати великана до вечера), when the housekeeper woke him (когда экономка разбудила его; to

wake /woke, woken/), and he drove home the cows (и он погнал коров домой). Meeting the king, he asked (повстречав короля он спросил), "Well, how has your daughter fared today (ну, как дела у вашей дочери сегодня; to fare —

жить, поживать, быть)?"

Sean Ruadh went to the first giant's castle and put away his horse, clothes, and sword. Then he slept on the giant's bed till evening, when the housekeeper woke him, and he drove home the cows. Meeting the king, he asked, "Well, how has your daughter fared today?"

"Oh! the urfeist came out of the sea to carry her away (большой змей вышел из моря, чтобы унести ее прочь); but a wonderful black champion came riding between earth and sky (но удивительный черный воин прибыл верхом между землей и небом) and saved her (и спас ее)."

"Who was he (кто это был такой: «кто он был»)?"

"Oh! there is many a man who says he did it (многие /сейчас/ говорят, что это именно они сделали это: «есть множество человек, которые говорят, что это именно они сделали это»). But my daughter isn't saved yet (но моя дочь еще не спасена), for the urfeist said he'd come tomorrow (потому что большой змей сказал, что он придет завтра)."

"Well, never fear (ну, не бойтесь; never — никогда; /эмоц.-усил./ нисколько, никоим образом; to fear — бояться, пугаться; опасаться, ожидать /чего- л. нежелательного/; never fear — не бойся; не беспокойся); perhaps another champion will come tomorrow (возможно, какой-нибудь другой отважный воин приедет завтра)."

Next morning Sean Ruadh drove the king's cows to the land of the second giant (на следующее утро Рыжий Джон погнал королевских коров во владения второго великана), where he left them feeding (где он оставил их пастись: «кормиться»; to leave /left/; to feed — кормить, давать пищу /кому-л./;
