The top of the chape is serrated and has corresponding decorative holes bounded by a horizontal rib. The bottom of the chape has a small knop. The rear has a wide seam to enable soldering to the back plate. The surface is covered with coarse file marks running horizontally, and has a black colour or patina, which may have been deliberately applied.

A copper alloy scabbard chape (separate back-plate type). It has a ragged serrated top edge with cordate openwork in the front. There is a basal globular knop at the bottom end. A heart shape has been cut in the front. There is also a metal ring connected to the top of the chape. Cast copper alloy sword chape. The chape is curved and convex, with turned over edges, and two incised lines just below the damaged open end. Heart-shaped openwork design in body. Scabbard chapes of this type date to the 15th to 16th centuries AD.

Front plate of a cast copper alloy composite chape (metal fitting from the base of a scabbard) of probable late medieval or early postmedieval date (1400 -1600). The chape is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. At the base of the chape is a small subcylindrical knop. The rear plate of this chape is lost. The chape measures 56mm in length, 26mm width, and is 4.8mm thick. It weighs 7.71 grams.

The front face of the chape is decorated with a number of cast and pierced motifs. These are arranged in linear bands. The upper most band consists of six pierced sub-circular holes; these are arranged in a crude cross. Below these piercing is a raised linear cast band. Below this is a single crescent shaped pierced hole. The rear of the front plate is undecorated.

One half of a composite cast copper-allloy sword or dagger chape of late medieval to early post-medieval date. The chape is sub-triangular in shape and measures 55.5 mm in length. It is 36.4 mm wide at its top and tapers to a knop at the bottom which is 7 mm wide. One of the chape’s sides is straight and the other curves to follow the curve of the blade. The chape is decorated with an openwork design of three subtriangular petals in the centre, facing away from one another. Above this are two raised horizontal lines above which are a series of five circular perforations in a horizontal line, each measuring circa 4 mm in diameter. the reverse of the chape is hollowed to hold the tip of the blade. A similar example can be viewed on this database, reference SFFC4B24. Whilst there are more common types of sword and dagger chape this curved type are seen fairly frequently. Such types date from the 15th to 16th centuries.

The copper alloy chape from a knife or dagger scabbard. The chape would fit a blade with a straight back and curved edge, for example a Medieval knife-dagger. This part of the chape is for one side of the blade only; it may have been cast in two separate parts. The chape has a slight lip on the reverse and sloping sides. The upper part is flat with a moulded ridge across the top, above which there is a scalloped edge. The three scallops have central circular pierced holes, now indistinct.

Medieval copper alloy dagger scabbard chape, 65mm long, 26mm wide and 3mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a dark green patina and weighs 8.32grams. The object is sub triangular in form with one straight edge and one long curved edge which meets a diagonally aligned upper edge. The upper edge is decorated with a row of semi circular protrusions, below which are three circular holes of differing size. Below these is a raised border which runs diagonally along the object. It has rounded edges and its pointed base has a spherical knop terminal.

Cast copper alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape. The chape has a raised central bar running vertically along its length, with a rectangular and circular openwork section either side of this bar. The chape terminates in a small rounded knob. The patina of the metal is a bright bronze colour, as a result of the soil conditions on the foreshore.
