My friend said that he (to wait for me outside the cinema at 6). 12. I decided to put up at Peter’s because I wasn’t sure I (to get a room at the hotel). 13. Lucy told me not to worry. She promised she (to send me a telegramme). 14. I wanted to phone Robert at 8 in the evening but then I changed my mind. I knew that he (to do his home-work at that time). 15. George had already seen the play. He was sure we (to enjoy it). 16. We phoned the airport and learnt that the flight (to be delayed for 3 hours).

Exercise 5. Use the verbs in brackets in the correct form. Mind the sequense of tenses.

Exercise 6. Use the verbs in brackets in the correct form. Mind the sequence of tenses.

Exercise 7. Change the verb in the main clause into the past tense making all the necessary changes in the subordinate clause.

1. My friend says that he has read some stories by O. Henry. 2. He says that he doesn’t know her address, but he is sure that he will find it out. 3.The boys are sure that they will get the tickets. 4. Don’t you see that everybody is looking at you? 5. He thinks that he will become a great artist. 6. She writes to her friend that they had an English evening party. 7. Mother is sure that I have passed all my exams. 8. The bills say that the circus will come on Saturday. 9. I am sure we are very late. 10. She doesn’t know that the young men knocked Roy down and beat him. 11. My brother asks me what I have written to my friend. 12. I hope that she will be glad to see you. 13. The doctor thinks that he will soon be well again. 14. He says that he has already begun to prepare for his exams. 15.The man says that he has lost his spectacles. 16. I think that she is laughing at you.

Exercise 8. Translate the phrase in brackets into English.

1. I noticed (что она смотрит на меня). 2. We knew (что она не вернется). 3. Mother said (что она просто не знает, что делать). 4. He spoke much better. It was clear (что он много занимался). 5. Exercise 9. Translate into English. Mind the sequense of tenses.

1. Вчера по дороге домой я зашел к Николаю. Он сказал, что только что получил телеграмму от матери и через час пойдет на вокзал встречать ее. 2. Я был удиален, когда узнал, что Роберт не сдал экзамены. 3. Петр сказал, что будет ждать меня у входа на стадион и просил меня не опаздывать. 4. Мы не знали, где они живут. 5. Мы решили, что проведем отпуск у моря. 6. Я знала, что он будет принимать участие в конференции. 7. Он сказал, что не знает, кто взял мою тетрадь. 8. Я был уверен, что он работает в библиотеке. 9. Ты заметил, в чем она была вчера? 10. Я не знала, что Ирина уезжает на следующий день. 11. Когда я его последний раз встретил, я спросил его, когда он вернет мне книги. 12. Когда я пришел домой, мама сказала, что полчаса тому назад мне звонил мой друг. 13. Бабушка хотела узнать, когда я опять приеду сюда. 14. Я знал, что она любит читать. 15. Он забыл, куда положил книгу. 16. Мы поняли, что он не знает урока.

Exercise 10. Translate into English. Mind the sequence of tenses.

1. Он сказал мне, что знает три иностранных языка. 2. Мой товарищ позвонил мне и сказал, что он болен и не сможет прийти на занятия. 3. Он понял, что сделал ошибку. 12. Она была уверена, что все сейчас смотрят на ее красное платье. 13. Сейчас он жалел, что плохо учился английскому языку в школе. 14. Я удив-лялась, что он не понимает таких простых вещей. 15. Я надеялся, что наша команда победит. 16. Он забыл, что уже читал эту книгу.
