Liquefied petroleum gas
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consists of petroleum hydrocarbons which, although gaseous at normal ambient temperatures and pressures, can be liquefied by the application of pressures of the order of a few atmospheres, and can therefore be conveniently stored and transported as liquid in light pressure containers.
In the production of gasoline, whether from wet gas (natural gasoline) or from refinery operations, considerable quantities of hydrocarbon gases are obtained. The heavier gases are compressed to yield various grades of LPG: commercial propane, mainly C3 hydrocarbons, commercial butane, mainly C4 hydrocarbons, and commercial mixtures of these two, often blended in a prescribed ratio. They are supplied in steel cylinders (bottles) or in bulk.
The quality of LPG is closely controlled by specifications which usually impose strict limits on vapour pressure, sulphur content and moisture content, and since the product is supplied in closed pressure vessels there is no opportunity for its quality to deteriorate.
