Darfur violence kills 300 thousand
The UN Secretary-General today renewed his call for all parties to the conflict in Darfur to cease hostilities and participate in the ongoing efforts to bring about a peaceful, negotiated settlement to the fighting that has wracked the Sudanese region for over seven years.
Government forces have clashed with members of a rebel movement in recent months, contributing to a deterioration in the security situation in Darfur. The rebel group has withdrawn from peace talks held in the Qatari capital as the fighting resumed and is yet to re-engage. Some 300,000 people are estimated to have been killed and another 2.7 million others displaced4 from their homes since fighting erupted in Darfur in 2003. Government forces and rebel groups have all been accused of grave human rights violations.
“We have consistently urged the Government and the rebels to refrain from violence and return to the negotiating table, and we will continue to do so,” the Secretary General of the UN stated at a news conference at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Meanwhile, efforts are continuing to ease recent tensions in the camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in South Darfur state that arose last month after the conclusion of the latest round of Doha talks, where some groups were unrepresented according to their contentions.

Лидеры ШОС озабочены напряженностью в регионе
Лидеры Шанхайской организации сотрудничества глубоко озабочены напряженностью вокруг вспыхнувшего недавно вооруженного конфликта. Об этом говорится в декларации, подписанной сегодня главами государств-членов ШОС по итогам саммита.
«Государства-члены ШОС выражают глубокую озабоченность в связи с напряженностью вокруг вспыхнувшего недавно вооруженного конфликта и призывают соответствующие стороны путем диалога мирно разрешать существующие проблемы и прилагать усилия к примирению и содействию переговорам», - говорится в декларации.
В документе также подчеркнуто, что «ставка исключительно на силовое решение не имеет перспективы, препятствует комплексному урегулированию локальных конфликтов, а всестороннее разрешение существующих проблем возможно только при полном учете интересов всех сторон, при их вовлеченности в процесс переговоров, а не изоляции». Попытки укрепить собственную безопасность в ущерб безопасности других не способствует сохранению глобальной безопасности и стабильности, - говорится в декларации.
Декларация состоит из 14 пунктов. В ней также говорится о том, что «ШОС открыта для конструктивного диалога со всеми международными и региональными организациями».
Подписи под документом поставили лидеры «шанхайской шестерки» - президенты Казахстана, Киргизии, России, Таджикистана, Узбекистана, а также председатель КНР.

SCO leaders express concern over tension in the region
The member states of the SCO express their deep concern in connection with (over) the tension(s) around the recent armed conflict, the Declaration signed today by the leaders of the SCO member-states on the achievements of (after) the summit, says.
“The member states of the SCO express their deep concern in connection with (over) the tension(s) around the armed conflict that has broken out recently and call on the relevant parties to resolve existing problems in a peaceful way through dialogue, to make efforts for reconciliation and facilitation of negotiations”, the Declaration says.
The document also emphasizes that “reliance on a solution based solely on the use of force faces no prospects, it hinders comprehensive settlement of local conflicts; effective resolution of existing problems can be possible only with due regard for the interests of all parties, through their involvement in a process of negotiations, not through isolation”. Attempts to strengthen one’s own security at the expense of that of the others do not assist the maintenance of global security and stability, the Declaration runs.
The Declaration contains 14 provisions. It also states that “the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is open for constructive dialogue with all international and regional organizations”.
The heads of the 6 SCO member states signed the Dushanbe Declaration of Heads of SCO Member States – the presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and the Chinese president (the chairman of China).
