1. Secretary-General condemns deadly rocket attack in southern Jordan

The UN Secretary-General has condemned this week’s rocket attack that killed one person in the southern Jordanian town of Aqaba³ and urged countries in the region to work together to bring those responsible to justice.

“This is an act of terrorism,” the UN chief said earlier today in response to journalists’ questions in Tokyo, where he is making an official visit. “After… [this] violence, and earlier unacceptable rocket attacks against civilian neighbourhoods in Israel, and Israel’s retaliatory air strikes on Gaza, which caused civilian casualties, I sincerely hope that all these countries concerned should exercise maximum restraint.”

He stressed the need for “an end to indiscriminate attacks by militants” and urged all parties in the region to remain focused on the urgent goal of moving forward the political process. “All these situations which happened recently would not be conducive to ongoing dialogue between Israel and Palestine for the peace process,” he added.

2. Un calls for restraint following violent clashes in Afghan capital

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan today expressed concern about violent clashes that erupted in the capital on Friday and called on all parties to cease hostilities and exercise restraint.

According to media reports, at least two people were killed in the ethnic clashes that broke out in Kabul. The UN mission issued a statement that voiced concern about ongoing tensions in parts of Kabul, and the reports of loss of life, injuries and damage to property.

“The United Nations calls on all parties to cease violence, and to maintain law and order,” the mission stated. The political mission set up by the Security Council to assist the Government and the people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development, also offered its good offices* to all parties to assist them in resolving disputes.

3. Secretary-General urges more serious efforts by parties to end conflict in Darfur

The UN Secretary-General has again urged all parties to the conflict in Darfur to seriously pursue peace, citing ongoing violence, displacement and human rights violations in the region despite several years of United Nations attempts to end the hostilities.

In his latest report to the Security Council on the joint African Union-UN mission in Darfur, the UN chief notes that 2010 has seen some indications of progress – including a protocol on border security signed by Sudan and Chad, and the holding of peaceful elections in Darfur.

Violence flared between Sudanese Government forces and those of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in May, in breach of an agreement on the cessation of hostilities signed earlier this year, making May the deadliest month since the establishment of the UN mission. In addition, tribal conflict, displacements, criminality and violations of human rights continued throughout the first half of this year in Darfur, where an estimated 300,000 people have been killed and 2.7 million others have been displaced in the past seven years as a result of fighting between rebels and Government forces.

1. Pakistan: Nine US troops killed as Taliban attack remote base close to Pakistan border

The NATO effort to subdue the Taliban suffered one of its heaviest blows since the 2001 invasion yesterday when nine US soldiers were killed and 15 other NATO troops injured in a battle in a region close to the Pakistan border. The US troops died as their base came under attack in eastern Afghanistan. The news puts further pressure on Pakistan, where coalition forces believe many Taliban militants are based. It was among the biggest losses for the coalition since the start of the war.

The fighting was set off by a militant assault on a small, remote US base. The attack began at 4.30am and lasted throughout the day, claiming the lives of nine Americans. There were heavy casualties among the Taliban.

With 28 soldiers killed, June was the deadliest month for coalition forces since 2001. July is looking to be costly in military and civilian terms. Earlier this month, the bombing of the Indian embassy in Kabul killed 41. The Afghan authorities accused Pakistan's intelligence agency of orchestrating the bombing.
