Great dating ideas

1

Inviting someone to a movie is definitely safe. One good way to make it a little interesting is to let your date choose the film, or put a bunch of movie names in a hat and pick one at random when you get together. Once the movie starts, you won't have to say anything. That can be a real relief if you find you are both shy.

2

It's another classic. But you'll have to think of something to talk about for an hour or two. Sometimes that can be hard, especially on the first date. Besides, it can be a little expensive if you aren't careful — so plan ahead.

3

Most cities and towns have museums: art museums, history museums, nature museums, etc. If you and your partner like this sort of thing, a museum can be a great place to go on a date.

4

Go rent a pair of roller skates together and spend the day at it. If you have never roller bladed before, make sure the first date includes taking a class so you can learn how to stop!

5

One way to break the ice with a group of people is to have a small party with a theme at your house. Invite your date as one of the people at the party. As a teenager you will probably have to get your parents involved —if that is comfortable for you it can be fun for your parents too. Most of these ideas work well for parties with 6 to 10 people:

6

Buy some pre-made pizza crusts, pizza sauce, and toppings (sausage, pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, etc). Pair people up and let each person create half of a pizza with whatever toppings they like. Cook the pizzas and then share them among the group. You can then all go to an ice cream place for dessert.

7

The idea behind a pot luck dinner is that everyone brings something. As the host of a small party you would want to make the 'main dish' and then have people bring other things like salads, side dishes, desserts, etc. You want to be sure to tell everyone exactly what to bring. If you don't then funny, strange things can happen.

A – Roller skating

B – Pot luck dinner

C – A cafe

D – Pizza Party

E – A movie

F – Parties

Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is the most important event in Lewes. But it isn't just about the Gunpowder Plot. It also remembers the Martyrs, seventeen Protestants who were burned in Lewes in the middle of the 16th century, during the reign of the Catholic Queen Mary. So as you might imagine the people of Lewes take their fifth-of-November celebrations rather more seriously than most other people.

In other British towns and cities the effigies of the Catholic Guy Fawkes are burned at Bonfire Night celebrations. But here in Lewes Guy Fawkes is only one of several victims! Pope Paul V, who became head of the Roman Catholic Church in 1605, is a regular victim too. In addition, the seven bonfire societies in Lewes prepare new effigies of 'Enemies of Bonfire'. Over the years, these have included Tony Blair, George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden. The main event usually starts at about 5.30 pm. The bonfire societies parade through the town dressed in colourful costumes, ranging from Tudor and Victorian dress to Native Americans and Vikings. They drag their effigies which they will later burn on one of five bonfires. Many people carry fire-lit torches. They march to the beat of drums and brass bands. Fireworks explode as they go, filling the air with pink smoke.

To mark the burning of the Martyrs, seventeen burning crosses are carried through the town and a wreath is laid on the War Memorial in the centre of the town.

The event is loud, colourful and impressive. It attracts thousands of people from all over the country... And then it's November the 6th, and everyone goes back to their quiet daily lives.

GUNPOWDER PLOT

When Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, her cousin James VI of Scotland became James I of England. James was a Protestant. He did not allow Catholics to practise their religion. Instead, he ordered Catholic priests to leave the country and he forced Catholics to attend Protestant church services. Catholics who didn't attend Protestant church services were punished.

This made Catholics angry, and a small group of them planned to kill the king by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. The plotters knew that on the 5th of November, 1605, the king and other nobles would be at the Houses of Parliament for the State Opening. That was the day when they wanted to blow them all up.

On 26th October a nobleman called Lord Monteagle got an anonymous letter telling him not to go to the State Opening. Lord Monteagle was a Catholic - this is probably why he received the letter. He was also loyal to the king, however, and immediately passed the letter on to him. So now the king knew about the plot.

In the morning of 5th November, guards searched the cellars of the Houses of Parliament. They found 36 barrels of gunpowder and arrested one of the plotters, Guy Fawkes.

Guy Fawkes was tortured until he confessed. Some other plotters were arrested later, and they were all executed.
