Preface to the Fifth Edition

P
harmacy, as a discipline, encompasses various branches,
each playing a crucial role in the discovery, development,
manufacturing, and distribution of pharmaceutical products.
Among these branches, pharmaceutics stands out as the
backbone, focusing on the formulation, preparation, and
delivery of medications to patients. For these reasons writing
and editing of a book is inspiring, often exciting, and sometimes
very challenging work.
It gives an immense pleasure in placing the book in hands
of the first year Diploma in Pharmacy students entitled Ashok
K Gupta’s Introduction to Pharmaceutics. The content of this
edited book based on latest syllabus of PCI ER-2020. The book,
previously released in two volumes, was structured according
to the PCI Education Regulation of 1991. However, in 2020,
following the updated education regulation by the Pharmacy
Council of India, the pharmaceutics subject, which was earlier
spread across two different years, has been consolidated into
a single curriculum. This revised subject is now a part of the
syllabus for the first year Diploma in Pharmacy course. This
book, tailored for students embark ing on their journey in
pharmacy, specifically designed for the first year of Diploma
in Pharmacy, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding
of the fundamental concepts and principles underlying
pharmaceutics.
The Diploma in Pharmacy curriculum lays the groundwork
for aspiring pharmacists, introducing them to the core elements
of pharmaceutics. This book is meticulously crafted to align
with the syllabus requirements, offering clear explanations,
illustrative examples, and some practical insights into the
diverse aspects of pharmaceutics.
Throughout the pages of this book, students will delve into
the intricacies of pharmaceutical dosage forms, drug delivery
systems, and much more. Each chapter is structured to facilitate
Introduction to Pharmaceutics
viii
learning, with comprehensive coverage of essential topics and
exercises to reinforce understanding.
As an editor, my aim is to provide students with a valuable
resource that not only aids in academic excellence but also
nurtures a deep-rooted appreciation for the science and
art of pharmaceutics. I have drawn upon our expertise and
experiences in pharmacy education to create a book that serves
as a trusted companion throughout the educational journey.
I encourage students to explore each chapter with curiosity,
engage actively in learning, and apply the knowledge gained
to real-world scenarios. With dedication, perseverance, and
the guidance provided in this textbook, I am confident that
students will develop a solid foundation in pharmaceutics,
paving the way for success in their academic and professional
endeavors.
I extend my gratitude to educators, practitioners, and
students whose contributions and feedback have enriched
the content of this book. It is my sincere hope that this book
serves as a beacon of knowledge and inspiration for all those
passionate about the science of pharmacy.
Best wishes on your educational voyage in pharmaceutics!

Preface to the First Edition

T
he author feel great pleasure in presenting this book titled
Introduction to Pharmaceutics, Parts I & II in the hands of the
esteemed teachers and students of Diploma in Pharmacy.
With the introduction of Education Regulation 1981 of
Pharmacy Council of India, the course contents of Diploma in
Pharmacy were revised to meet the present day requirements
of the industries and practising pharmacists. Since no book
is available which fulfil all the requirements, therefore, the
author has ventured to write this book covering all the topics
of the new syllabus to meet the long felt demand of the
teachers and students of Diploma in Pharmacy. Taking into
consideration the difficulties faced by the students this book
is written strictly according to the syllabus and in a simple
language giving suitable illustrations where applicable. I am
confident that they would like the book.
I am deeply indebted to our Ex-Principal, Sh. JR Bhardwaj
for inspiration, guidance and elderly advice from time to time.
My sincere thanks are due to Sh. SS Bajaj, Head, Department
of Pharmacy, Govt. Polytechnic for Women, Chandigarh, for
the encouragement, constructive criticism and guidance, he has
been giving whenever any problem was discussed with him.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my colleagues and friends
techning in different pharmacy institutions throughout the
country for promptly responding to the request for providing
information on different aspects of the subject matter of the
book.
I am thankful to Sh. Satish Kumar Jain, CBS Publishers &
Distributors for taking out present book in a commendably
short time in spite of heavy seasonal work.
In spite of geat care there may be mistakes and deficiencies.
I will be grateful to the teachers and students who point them
out and make suggestions for improving the quality of the
book.
August 1991 AK Gupta

Acknowledgments

I
express my deepest gratitude to God. Through the process of
creating this book, I have come to recognize the authenticity
of my gift for writing. Your divine guidance has empowered
me to embrace my passion and chase my aspirations. Without
my unwavering faith in you, Almighty, I could not have
achieved this feat.
To my parents (father Shri Rameshwar Dayal Verma and
mother Smt Mithlesh Verma), I am speechless. I can barely
find the words to express all the wisdom, love and support
you have given me. I am indebted to my parents for their
encouragement.
Sometimes it becomes really hard to pick up the right words
for those whose love and care is fathomless. It is beyond the
capacity of all the words to express my respect for profound
love and affection I received from “Bharti” my life partner,
who will always be with me till my life as a great companion
and a most close friend for me to proud.
I am very thankful to my two precious gemstones of my
life, my daughter Dhruvika and my son Druvaditya, for their
cute and loving smiling face always release my all tensions
and worries. Both are the source of my happiness.
I would like to express my deep appreciation and profound
gratitude to my mentor, Prof Sanjay K Jain, for his illuminating
guidance and supervision in this book.
I would also like to thank Late Ashok K Gupta Sir from
the bottom of my heart because I have taken up the task of
editing this book by taking inspiration from the footprints, he
had created in the previous edition of this book.
I would also like to express my gratitude to YN Arjuna,
Senior Vice President—Publishing, Editorial and Publicity,
CBS Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, because this book
would never have been possible without his invaluable
advice, benevolent guidance, constructive ideas, and, timely
intervention.
