Assessment of Aortic Aneurysm Rupture Risk and Surgical Repair
47
CONCLUSION
With the absence of warning symptoms and the risk of current treatments, there remains a
need for accurate AAA-rupture risk predictors. In clinical practice, the maximum AAA
diameter criterion of 5.5 cm is often used. However, small aneurysms below this level can
also rupture. Thus, AAA growth rate, biomarkers, and biomechanics-based parameters, such
as peak wall stress and the stress-to-strength ratio, have been investigated as alternative
criteria, and methods to more accurately determine these parameters have also been studied.
In addition to better rupture-risk assessment, AAA treatments, especially endovascular
aneurysm repair, have been investigated and revised for improved patient outcome.
