About the Author
Don Scheumann began his education in personal growth
and transformation as a teenager, when he commenced yoga
studies at the Yoga Society of New York. After graduating from
SUNY with a BFA in dance, he pursued a career in modern
dance in New York City. During this period, he undertook an
internship at a major holistic health center, where he studied
with many of the premier educators in the human potential
movement. This experience led him to move away from the
performing arts and devote his career to the exploration of the
body as a tool for healing. In 1980, he became a certified yoga
instructor, and in 1982 he graduated from massage school.
His other certifications in bodywork modalities include polarity, neuromuscular therapy, Reiki, Pfrimmer deep muscle
therapy, acupressure, and Zen therapy.
Don was a massage practitioner and instructor for more
than 20 years. For much of that time, he taught at the Atlanta
School of Massage, where he was a major contributor to
curriculum development, creating many of the classes for
the Integrated and Deep Tissue Program, as well as classes
in the Wellness and Spa Therapies Program.
The Balanced Body was first published in 1997, and Don
successfully stewarded it through two more editions. In this
time, it has become a well-used and much-respected book
in the profession. The massage therapy community lost a
beloved practitioner and teacher with Don’s passing in 2008.
Ruth Werner, BCTMB is a retired massage therapist, and
an active writer and educator for massage therapists. Her first
book, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology, was published
in 1998. Now in its 6th edition, it is used all over the world.
Ruth is a columnist for Massage & Bodywork magazine, and
volunteers on several national and international committees
for the profession. She was recognized as the Jerome Perlinski
Teacher of the Year in 2005—an honor she shares with Don
Scheumann, who was recognized in 2001. She served two
terms as the president of the Massage Therapy Foundation,
and retains a seat on the Board of Trustees. Ruth is fulfilling
a lifelong dream of living on the Oregon Coast, where she is
daily inspired by her surroundings.

Foreword
By Cindy E. Farrar, LMT, BCTMB
At first glance, you may think The Balanced Body is just another
deep-tissue-massage text. I am happy to inform you that you
would be incorrect and that you are in for a great surprise!
The Balanced Body is a compilation of a lifetime of study,
practice, and teaching of deep tissue massage and neuromuscular therapy by Don Scheumann. It is a system of therapeutic
massage that takes into consideration the whole client and
challenges the massage therapist to bring his or her whole self
and focused awareness to each session. It also seeks to expand
the self-awareness of the client, leading to the potential for
the greatest therapeutic results.
Twenty years ago when I was a massage student, our Deep
Tissue Manual was a loose-leaf binder that would serve as
the precursor to the initial Balanced Body manuscript. Don
Scheumann was one of my main instructors. I recall being
somewhat in awe as I listened to Don effortlessly relate vast
amounts of information across the various curriculum subjects,
linking it together as if telling us a story. The only thing that
seemed to be more fluid for Don was the manner in which
he moved and utilized his body. He was the model of body
awareness, alignment, biomechanics, and efficiency. In secret,
I called him the “human lava lamp.”
Don frequently dropped jewels of wisdom that were especially noteworthy. The extent to which they would play a role
in the success and longevity of his many students’ practices,
we had no way of knowing. Recently, my friend and one
of Don’s students of 21 years ago, Joan Rau, LMT, shared
with me that, to this day, when she is preparing her table
and room for her clients she thinks of what Don impressed
upon her. “How I presented myself as well as my work space,
how I dressed my table was just as important as the work I
did with my hands. How will someone feel walking into my
space? He was the first to introduce the concept of ’being
fully present’ with my client during the massage. Being fully
present allows me to be open to the conversation between
my hands and the tissues underneath them. That concept
was a great gift to his students and one I carry with me every
time I work on someone.”
I would later teach and devise curriculum from the first
and second editions of The Balanced Body. It was impressive
to find that the core of the material remained the same as
in the binder manual I learned from 10 years prior. During
my time teaching, I would also have the good fortune to be
in the classroom alongside Don. While I was in a supervisory position, he remained my teacher. I found not only my
teaching skills sharpened, the quality of my massage sessions
was also heightened.
Don consistently encouraged his students to see the potential for wellness in our clients. This continues to inform
how I interact with my clients today. And that system of Deep
Tissue Massage I learned two decades ago (as did scores of
others before and after me) has served and continues to serve
as the foundation for my massage sessions. In addition, it has
assisted countless clients to return to, establish, and maintain
a significantly high level of wellness.
It has been a privilege and honor to consult on this revision
of The Balanced Body. This fourth edition maintains the
integrity and enhances the system of Deep Tissue Massage
and Neuromuscular Therapy that has stood the test of many
decades, therapists, and clients.
