Foreword

Dr. Amit Singh and Dr. Divakar Sharma deliver a highly useful work in the form of a book entitled Diagnosis of Mycobacterium. This book contains a collection of chapters on recent developments in the diagnosis of Mycobacterium from various types of samples. The editors have recruited a vast array of tuberculosis specialists to write different chapters that constitute this book. The chapters are structured in such a way that the reader may easily nd pearls about tuberculosis diagnostics and its applications to timely manage mycobacterium-related current issues, especially drug resistance. I am sure researchers who are working in the elds of diagnosis of mycobacterium and related research will nd this compilation useful and enjoyable.

Preface

Recent advancements in the eld of diagnostic biology have dramatically increased the complexity of this eld. The diagnosis of mycobacterium is widely available and plays an increasing role in the diagnosis and management of tuberculosis. However, proper knowledge for recommending tests for the diagnosis of different forms of tuberculosis is crucial for correct and timely diagnosis. Inappropriate knowledge about the tests leads to delays in diagnosis, misinterpretation of results, and hampers the management of mycobacterial infection, which can contribute to the development of MDR and XDR tuberculosis. This book is the result of 15years of working experience in the eld of tuberculosis research, diagnosis, and challenges. It stands out among other books as it specially focuses on the diagnosis of mycobacterium in humans, pediatrics cases, zoonotic TB, and NTMs. This book includes the most historic diagnosis, i.e., smear microscopy, clinical diagnosis, radiological diagnosis to more advanced microbiological and molecular diagnosis of TB infection. The diagnosis of latent TB infection is also addressed, which is crucial for TB control. Since TB diagnostics are continuously evolving, the book also includes future diagnostic techniques such as nano-biosensor-based diagnosis. The mycobacterium diagnostic methods are still evolving and this book will be helpful to upgrade the knowledge about the relevant diagnostic methods used for the detection of mycobacterium from various clinical samples. Tremendous advances have been made in the eld of diagnostics in the last few years, particularly resulting from the introduction of molecular biology tools.
I have had the privilege of working and establishing a lab for the routine microbiological and molecular diagnosis of mycobacterium at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal, under the guidance of eminent clinical microbiologist Prof. Sarman Singh who signicantly contributed to the eld of mycobacteriology. I was privileged to work under his guidance. We believe that primarily in countries with high TB endemicity, a quick and handy book on the diagnosis of mycobacterium is useful for microbiologists, clinicians, teachers, researchers, and PG and UG students of medicine and microbiology.

Preface
I wish to acknowledge the outstanding assistance from all the authors, contributors, colleagues, and physicians in the preparation of this book. Without them, this book may not have been possible. I would also like to thank all the patients and collaborators for their support from AIIMS, New Delhi, ICGEB, New Delhi, AIIMS, Bhopal, and Delhi University for improving and developing newer diagnostics for tuberculosis. Furthermore, I wish to thank all the helpful and kind people from the publishers involved in the production of this book. We hope that our initiative will inspire the interest of our microbiologists, physicians, students, and researchers not only in the solution of TB clinical and laboratory diagnostics dilemmas but also prompt them to present innovative queries on routine and basic diagnosis, nurturing a continuous bidirectional exchange among the realms of health care and those of clinical and basic research.
This book divided into several chapters. The rst chapter covers the basics of various diagnostics of mycobacterium and then the clinical, radiological, pathological, biochemical, and hematological-based diagnostics. Moreover, it covers the entire eld of mycobacterium diagnosis from microscopy to molecular tests, providing the latest content. However, the reader should consider that this eld is still changing rapidly and day-to-day improvements and newer diagnostics will get included. Suggestions for further improvements to be considered in future editions are highly appreciated. Please contact the editor at amit4us@gmail.com, amit.
