26 Carbon-Based Nanocarriers for Drug Delivery
1.5 SUMMARY
Extensive research on carbon-based nanomaterials, including 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D congured derivativesover the past 20years, have revealed their perspective for use in a range of elds, including biomedical applications, environmental remediation, and catalysis.CBNs are highly suited for their wide range of applications due to their distinctive structural features, chemical inertness, optoelectroniccapabilities, and surface tunability.The advancement of CBNshasbeen accelerated, especially for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, as a result of recent concerns about world health and the essential need to alleviate debilitating diseases. Multimodal surveillance, light-mediated treatment, and diagnostics are made possible by the optical characteristics of CBNs, which include uorescence andluminescence. As intriguing nanoplatforms for the combined strategy of drug administration and diagnostics in the mitigation of conditions like cancer, CBNs’ low dimensionality, high surface-to-volume ratio, adjustable surface characteristics, and reasonable biocompatibility represent a few of their other signicant advantages.
In addition, the porous structure and functionalization ability of CBNs have demonstrated signicant advantages for their application of environmental remediations. The CBNs are primarily utilized for the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, along with the separation of heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and agricultural pollutants. The opto-electronic attributes of CBNs, especially CQDs, have demonstrated their potential application in sensing trace molecules, gas, and other contaminants.
In the present chapter, we have highlighted the fundamental characteristics of CBNs, including their structure, surface characteristics, and potential applications. The characterization techniques have been demonstrated to validate and investigate the structural, morphological, and functional attributes of CBNs, including graphene, GO, CNTs, and CQDs. It is believed that the fundamental understanding of CBNs may contribute to the advancements of these nanomaterials and open up new avenues for their application in drug delivery systems.
