Labeled: COMM HEP ART (A), SPLENIC ART (B)
SCANNING TIP: The hepatic artery may be followed from the celiac artery bifurcation to the level of its entry into the liver at the porta hepatis. Images and Doppler spectral waveforms should be documented throughout the proximal, mid, and distal segments of the vessel. In a similar manner, the splenic artery may be examined from its origin at the celiac bifurcation to the level of the splenic hilum. Images and Doppler spectral waveforms are documented throughout the proximal, mid, and distal segments of the vessel. The splenic artery is frequently quite tortuous and color flow imaging may facilitate examination of this artery.

Labeled: SMA PROX or MID
SCANNING TIP: The inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is not routinely examined. If the celiac and/or SMA are critically stenosed or occluded, the IMA would be evaluated in a manner similar to the study of the SMA. At present, there are no well-validated diagnostic criteria for the IMA, but the presence of poststenotic turbulence would be suggestive of a hemodynamically significant lesion.

SCANNING TIP: Approximately 20% of patients will have more than 1 renal artery on each side. For reasons that are not well understood, this finding is more commonly seen on the left side than on the right.
