Handbook of 3D Printing in Pharmaceutics
scientists are working on formulation development approaches using 3DP to meet
patient needs. The domain of medical devices, prosthetics, implants, dentures, surgical accessories, regenerative medicine and tissue/ organ fabrication have seen the
utility value of 3DP technology for tailoring individual patient needs. Despite the signicant advancements in medicine delivery facilitated by 3DP technology, there are
numerous obstacles that necessitate careful consideration. Some factors comprise the
type of AM technology suitable, the printing rate, the speed of the printing head,
the time interval allocated to print each layer, selection of the polymer material
for the printing process. In addition to the challenges inherent in the printing process,
the cost of product development and the lack of built- in exibility pose signicant
concerns in the context of 3D printing. From a manufacturing perspective and technique employed, a comprehensive understanding of various factors is necessary, for
example, the powder rate of the binder liquid, the interaction between the binder
and the powder, the processes of re- solidication and evaporation, as well as the
dissolving of the powder. The troubleshooting varies with each material and method
employed and the product in consideration for printing, especially pharmaceuticals
where the stability of the drug candidate is important. As technology advances, the
potential applications of 3DP in healthcare are likely to expand. The existing lacunae
would be overcome leading to more innovative approaches for delivering healthcare
services.
