Posterior: At or toward the back of the
body or the head.
Poststimulus Time Histogram (PSTH): A
plot displaying the firing rate of a nerve fiber to an eliciting stimulus over the period of time that it fires.
Presbycusis: Hearing loss and decrease of
auditory function that occurs with aging; also referred to as age-related hearing loss.
Pressure Equalization (PE) Tube: Small
ventilation tube surgically placed in the eardrum to compensate for a malfunc­tioning Eustachian tube; also referred to as a tympanostomy tube.
Prevalence: The total number of cases of a
specific disease or disorder existing in a given population at a certain time.
Proband: A person serving as the starting
point for the genetic study of a family.
Protympanum: The anterior-most space of
the middle ear that contains the opening of the Eustachian tube.
Proximal: At or toward the trunk or point
of origin.
Prussak’s Space: Posterior epitympanic
space.
Putamen: A structure in the basal ganglia. QT Interval: A defined part of the heart’s
electrical cycle.
Recruitment: The abnormal growth in loud-
ness perception as intensity increases.
Residual Inhibition:
which there is a temporary decrease or elimination of the perception of tinni­tus following the delivery of a masking noise.
Retinitis Pigmentosa: A genetic eye disor-
der eventually leading to blindness.
Retrocochlear: The portion of the auditory
system that is “behind or beyond the cochlea” (i.e., the auditory nerve and the central auditory system).
Rhinorrhea: Discharge from the nose. Rhinoscopy: Examination of the inside of
the nose.

Scutum: Sharp spur formed by the lateral
wall of the tympanic cavity.
Sensation Level: The intensity of a sound
above an individual’s threshold.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Type of hear-
ing loss resulting from impairment to the inner ear, auditory nerve, or retrocochlear auditory structures.
Sigmoid Sinus: A large vein posterior and
slightly inferior to posterior temporal bone.
Stapedotomy: Surgical intervention for
otosclerosis that involves removing the stapes’ superstructure, creating a hole in the fixed footplate with a drill or laser, and placing a prosthesis from the incus to the stapedotomy site.
Stereocilia:
ing actin filaments that are arranged in an orderly fashion on the tops of the inner and outer hair cells of the cochlea; stereo­cilia are also found in the sensory cells of the peripheral vestibular system.
Sternocleidomastoid: A large, superficial
cervical muscle located on the lateral aspect of the neck which acts to rotate the head.

genetic condition that involves not only the auditory system but also other sys­tems, making it a multifaceted disorder.
Temporalis Fascia: Covering of the tempo-
ralis muscle.
Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS): A tem-
porary change in threshold hearing that returns to preexposure levels over time.

Tinnitus: The internal perception of sound
in the absence of acoustic stimulus.
Torus Tubarius: The base of the cartilagi-
nous portion of the Eustachian tube.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Non-
invasive technique used to stimulate various regions of the brain by applying a magnetic coil to the scalp that generates a current that passes through the scalp to stimulate the brain tissue of interest.
Transient Ischemic Attacks: Temporary
decreases in blood supply to an area of the brain that results in temporary (or transient) symptoms.
Transverse: An anatomic plane that hori-
zontally divides the head or the body into upper and lower segments.
Transverse Fracture: A fracture that runs
perpendicular to the long axis of the petrous bone that occurs as a result of blunt force trauma to the skull.
Trigeminal Neuralgia: Dysfunction of the
fifth cranial nerve (trigeminal), often resulting in facial pain.
Tullio’s phenomenon: Vertigo elicited by a
loud sound.
Tuning Curve: A graph depicting the re-
sponse of a neuron, plotted as a function of stimulus intensity versus frequency; the lowest sound level to which the neu­ron responds is represented by the tip of the tuning curve.
Tympanic Membrane: The membrane that
separates the outer and middle ears; also commonly referred to as the eardrum.

Tympanometry:
measure the pressure, volume, and com­pliance of the middle ear system.
Tympanoplasty: Surgery in which disease
is removed from the middle ear and a weakened or perforated eardrum is repaired.
Vagus Nerve: The tenth cranial nerve re-
sponsible for many instinctive responses from the body.
Valsalva Maneuver: Inflation of the middle
ear produced by closing the mouth and pinching the nose and then exhaling (force­fully) air to open the Eustachian tube.
Valsalva Test:
expiration of air with a closed mouth and an occluded nose while the tympanic membrane is inspected.
Vascular Steel: A disorder in which one
area of the brain “robs” another area of some of its blood supply.
Vasculitis: Inflammation of blood vessels. Vasoconstriction: A narrowing of the lumen
of a blood vessel that results in a restric­tion of the flow of blood through the involved vessel.
Vasodilators: Agents that increase the lu-
men of blood vessels and increase blood supply.
Ventral: At or toward the front of the body
or the head.
Vertigo: A vestibular symptom in which the
patient either has a spinning sensation or senses that the environment is spinning while he or she remains stationary.
Videonystagmography (VNG): A test of
vestibular function in which nystagmus is recorded using infrared goggles dur­ing stimulation of the vestibular system; includes a battery of subtests divided into three groups: ocular-motor, posi­tional, and caloric.
Voxels: A volume element, representing a
value on a regular grid in a three-dimen­sional space. This is analogous to a pixel, which represents two-dimensional image data used in various types of imaging (radiology, television).

Wallerian Degeneration: Degeneration of
the nerve fiber due to trauma. Specifi­cally, the axon separates from the nerve body.
Weber Test: A tuning fork test in which
bone-conduction signals are presented to a midline site on the frontal bone; the sound will lateralize to an ear with a con­ductive hearing loss if one is present.
X-linked: Mode of transmission of genes
on the sex-linked X-chromosome.
Zygosity: The similarity of a gene’s two
