A patient is calling after a sclerotherapy session with the fol­lowing concerns:
I have a hard lump where you made an injection:
– Apply some antiinflammatory ointment. (Demonstrating
the advantage of prescribing some at the first session for further possible use.)
I have a hard cord:
– Apply some antiinflammatory ointment.
I’ve got bruises all over the injected area:
– Apply some aniinflammatory ointment and the bruising
will fade in 1 to 2 weeks.
My leg is aching at the site of the injections:
– Apply some antiinflammatory ointment and take a pain
killer; if it is swollen, come to the office today. Did you wear the compression stocking I prescribed?
My eyesight is fuzzy/grey after the sclerotherapy session:
– It will go away after 20 minutes, it is not serious, it’s like
a migraine, we will talk about it at your next appointment.
I’ve got a swollen leg:
– Come to the office today.
I want to cancel my appointments:
– Whatever the reason, come and show me your legs
before we stop the treatment.
Can I sunbathe?
– I advise against sun; avoid prolonged sunbathing,
especially for 2 weeks after your last sclerotherapy session.
May I shower?
– Yes, even tonight, but avoid hot water!
May I use the swimming pool?
– Yes, tomorrow.
What about sports?
– During the sclerotherapy treatment sporting activity that
is not too strenuous is OK (explain what you have in mind).
