The Card of General Invitation. Invitations to important entertainment are nearly always specially engraved, so that nothing is written except the name of the person invited. But for the hospitable hostess, a card which is engraved in blank, so that it may serve for dinner, luncheon, dance, lecture, musicale, or whatever she may care to give is indispensable.

Mr. and Mrs. Stevens request the pleasure of

………………………..

company at

on …………………….

………………………..

at ……………………..

Two Knob Hill

R.S.V.P. (for dinner or lunch only)

Recalling an Invitation. If for illness or other reasons invitations have to be recalled, the following forms are correct. They are always printed instead of enraged, there being no time for engraving.

Owing to the sudden illness of ……

Mr. and Mrs. John Huntington Smith

are obliged to recall their invitations for Tuesday, the tenth of June.

The Formal Acceptance or Regret. Answers to informal invitations are telephoned more often than not.

The formal acceptance of an invitation, whether it be to a luncheon, a tea or a dance, is identical in general form.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lovejoy accept with pleasure

Mr. and Mrs. Worldly’s kind invitation for dinner

on Monday, the tenth of December at eight o’clock.

The formula for regret: Mr. Clubwin Doe

regrets that he is unable to accept

Mr. and Mrs. Worldly’s

30

kind invitation for dinner

on Monday, the tenth of December.

“Monday, December the tenth” is sometimes used, but the wording above is best form.

The Formal Invitation by Telephone. Custom, which had altered many ways and manners, has taken away all opprobrium from the formal invitation by telephone. Such messages, however, follow very closely a prescribed form.

“Is this Lenox 2-000? Will you please ask Mr. and Mrs. Smith if they will dine with Mrs. Jantham Jones next Tuesday, the tenth, at eight o’clock? Mrs. Jones telephone number is R-Egent 4-0011”.

The answer:

“Mr. and Mrs. Hintington Smith regret very much that they will be unable to dine with Mrs. Jones on Tuesday, the tenth, as they are engaged for that evening”.

Or:

“Pleasure tell Mrs. Jones that Mr. and Mrs. Smith will dine with her on Tuesday, the tenth, at eight o’clock, with pleasure”.

18. Render the following into English.

19. Read the following. Describe how a gentleman should be dressed at a ball, at the theater, on day-time occasions, in a restaurant, at a dinner (or evening party).

The Clothes of a Gentleman

Formal Evening Clothes. Wrong clothes, whether new or old, are like illiteracies of speech.

33

A tail coat must be made of a dull-faced worsted, either black or more likely night blue, on no account of broadcloth. Aside from the silk facing of the lapels, wide braid on the trousers and the buttons on the sleeves and on the front and back of the coat, it must have no trimming whatever, and must hang open.

Have your linen faultlessly clean and your tie of plain white lawn, or pique. Your handkerchief must be white, of very fine linen preferably; gloves, if any,

white; flower in buttonhole, if any, white.

The Dinner Coat or Tuxedo. The tuxedo is merely the English dinner coat, which was first introduced in this country at the Tuxedo Club in the nearly nineties to provide something less formal than the swallow-tail; and the nickname has clung ever since. To a man who cannot afford to get two suits of clothes the tuxedo is of greater importance. It is worn every evening and nearly everywhere, whereas the tail coat is necessary only at balls, formal dinners and in a box at the opera. Tuxedo clothes are made of the same materials and differ from full dress ones in only three particulars: the cut of the coat, the braid on the trousers, and the use of a black tie instead of white.

What to Wear on Various Occasions.

Full Dress (Tail Coat).

1.At a ball.

2.At a dinner (or evening party) to which the invitations are worded in the third person, and given in winter season.

Single-Breasted Tuxedo (Dinner Coat). This is the most essential item in the evening wardrobe of a gentleman.

1.At every evening party except those which are ceremoniously formal.

2.On opening nights at the theater.

3.Dining in a de luxe restaurant.

Double-Breasted Tuxedo. The double-breasted tuxedo coat is always worn buttoned and is the most informal evening dress for a man since a waistcoat is not worn under it.

A Cut-awate (Morning Coat) with Stripped Trousers. On all daytime occasions and ceremony.

Black Sack Coat with Stripped Trousers. Very popular in diplomatic circles and excellent anywhere as a less formal substitute for a cut-away.

Business (Sack) Suits.

1.For every ordinary occasion in town.

2.Travelling.

20. Read the following. Describe how a lady should be dressed in the afternoon.

Then Clothes of a Lady

Do you Know How to Wear Clothes? The first impression that we make upon others depends entirely upon we wear and how to wear it.

The woman who knows hot to wear clothes is like a stage director who skillfully presents herself.

The sense of what is becoming and the knack of putting clothes on well are the two greatest assets of smartness. And both are acquirable by anyone willing to look at herself as she really is!

Following Fashion Has Little in Common with Beauty. Fashion has the power to appear temporarily in the guise of beauty, though it is the antithesis of beauty as often as not.

There is one unchanging principle which must be followed by everyone who would be dressed suitability and not being dressed to the minute and following every turn of latest fashion blindly.

Vulgar Clothes, Vulgar clothes are those which no matter what the fashion of the moment may be are always too elaborate for the occasion; they are too exaggerated in style, or accessories out of harmony with the dress and the wearer.

The woman who is Chic. The woman who is chic is always a little different. Not different in being behind fashion but always slightly apart from it.

The woman who is chic adapts the fashion to her own personality. This is in contrast to the one who merely buy the latest hat or dress and adapt herself to it, whether the fashion is suited her or not.

How Many Jewels. It has always been the rule not to wear too many jewels in public because public display is considered poor taste.

Since jewelry is after all ornamentation, glass makes quite as effective trimming as gems and, like all other trimming, can be overdone.

Women wear their rings at breakfast, lunch or dinner without the least discrimination in their size of value.

Clothes for the Afternoon. The hours between one and six are occasions when important day dresses are appropriate. If you have few clothes, you may perfectly well wear the simplest sort dress in which you look well.

You need never worry be you are not “dressed" as much as the others: The time to worry is when you are over-dressed .

36

At a formal lunch party in town, people usually wear worsted or dull silks made with tailored simplicity. The same is true for an afternoon tea or concert. For a cocktail party day dresses are correct. A dinner dress is permissible only when worn by an intimate friend who has stopped in quite late, on her way to a dinner party.

When in Doubt. There is one rule that is fairly safe when in doubt, wear one plainer dress. If you don't know whether to put on a ball dress or a dinner dress, wear a dinner dress; wear wool or velvet to a lunch party, wear wool.

Shall I wear a Hat? Not withstanding the continued practice of certain younger women to go hatless on all occasions, best taste exacts that in a city a hat be worn with street clothes in the daytime. In fact it is impossible for a hatless woman to be chic. With an evening dress a hat is incorrect except on the stage in a musical review.

Gloves. Always wear gloves as well as hat on the street in a city. Always wear gloves in a theater, in a restaurant when you go to lunch, or to a formal dinner. Always take them off when you eat. The question of length and color is one of transient fashion and personal taste.

A lady does not take off her gloves to shake hands, no matter when or where, and never apologizes for wearing gloves when shaking hands.

Hostess Less Dressed than Guests. A hostess should be less elaborately dressed than her guests, but her clothes may be more formal in type. For example, she would wear a semievening dress, when she is giving a cocktail party or a tea to which other people come.

Meaning of Semi-formal, in communities where the tail coat is worn "semiformal" means dinner jackets (tuxedos) and simple evening dresses. But whenever men wear business suits women should wear afternoon not evening dresses. A man's business suit is actually as unbecoming to a woman's evening dress as his hat would be on her head.

Clothes for a Business Woman. The first requirement is neatness. The unfailing directions for clothes worn in an office are that they be tailor-made, smart to the least degree and in perfect taste, but in nothing conspicuous. Above all, avoid wearing clothes that need constant arranging.

Also wear clothes that properly cover you. Conspicuous as well as transparent clothes are entirely out of place in business. In hot weather very shot sleeves are permissible, but not cut – out armholes or low back.

Neat, beautifully done hair, but no little-girl effect of hair hanging loose, is in best taste.

37

One important accessory for beautiful business clothes is a pair of plain sensible shoes, designed to given proper support to the foot. High-heeled, fancy sandals and slippers not only are inappropriate and extravagant, but ruinous to any foot that must be much stood upon.

21.Imagine that you are invited to an evening party (lunch, dinner, ball, theater, restaurant). What will you out on?

22.Has any of your friends ever been unsuitably dressed? Describe how it has happened.

23.If it interests you to know how good or otherwise telephone manners may be, the number of times you can answer “Yes” to the following test questions will give you your rating.

1)Do you make sure of the correct number so as not to risk strangers by

“calling from memory”?

2)Do you make conversation with busy people as brief as possible?

3)When calling intimate friends who do not recognize your voice do you resist playing a game of “Guess who?” and announce yourself promptly?

4)Do you try to time your calls sp as not to interfere with the occupations of those you call most often?

5)If you call a young mother often, do you take note of her children’s meal and bath time so as to avoid these hours?

6)If you want to have a conversation of any length, do you ask whether the other person is free to listen or whether to call back at another time?

7)Do you treat wrong-number calls as mutual inconvenience and answer,

“Sorry, wrong number”, in a tone of polite sympathy instead of showing illtempered annoyance?

8)On dial phone, do you always wait for dial tone?

9)If you are either a fond parent or doting grandparent, do you realize that the charming prattle of your little ones who rush so happily to answer a telephone can be imitating at times rather than delighting to a caller – especially one calling from a great distance?

10)When you call a long-distance number from the house of a friend, do you always ask the toll operator for the change and leave the correct amount?

11)When you hear an unexpected voice, do you at once ask, “Is this Broad 1234?” instead of asking “What number is this?”

38

12)When unable to stop what you are doing, do you explain and offer to call back in so many minutes, rather than say “I’ll be back in a second”, and then keep your caller holding the wire much longer than you realize?

13)In reverse of this, do you explain to one calling you that you have a visitor and will call back at a later time and not let the visitor sit listening to your half of what to her must be unintelligible and boring conversation that runs on and on?

14)When the number you are calling is not answered quickly, do you wait long enough for someone to lay aside what she may be doing so that when she reaches the telephone she will not have been disturbed just to answer the telephone you have already hung up?

15)Do you, when making a number of calls on party line, space them so that others on the line may have a chance to use their telephones?

16)In a general office, do you explain to personal friends inclined to talk at length that you will call them after hours?
