Деловой этикет. Ч.2. Учебно-методическое пособие
.pdfR. V.: Mr…, why are there so many people carrying books in their hands? F. R.: We’re passing by one of the many schools.
R. V.: What a nice building! It must be stadium.
F. R.: You are right. Sport is gaming in popularity. Now, Mr … we are approaching the old part. It’s nothing much, I must admit, but the Government is carrying out an extensive housing programme, so these small houses will go soon.
R. V.: What goes on here?
F. R.: There are small businesses – retail shops and clothing factories. You’ll see them all around here.
II.PLANS FOR THE WEEKEND
F.R.: Is there anything you are planning for the coming weekend, Mr… ?
R. V.: I haven’t made up my mind about anything yet. In fact I leave it to you.
F. R.: What would you say if we went to Agra?
R. V.: That’s a splendid ides. To be honest I’ve been looking forward to this invitation. I’m told the Taj Mahal is a “must” for all visitors of India.
F. R.: There are actually several sights to be seen in Agra besides the Taj Mahal. It’s Agra’s Fort from which a grand view of the Taj Mahal opens up. We could also visit the Dead City some 40 km away. It dates back to the 15th century.
R. V.: Incidentally, Mr…, is Agra a long way from Delhi?
F. R.: About 180 km. It’ll take us from 3 to 4 hours by car. The road is picturesque and there are several ancient temples on the way.
R. V.: All this sounds very exciting. I’ve heard so much about the Taj Mahal, but they say it’s better to see it once than to hear a lot about it.
F. R.: Exactly so. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the visit.
III. ASKING THE WAY RECEPTIONIST: Good afternoon, sir. Is there anything you need? R. V.: Good afternoon. I was wondering when the news-stand opens.
R.: Normally it’s open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but today it’s closed because the man has fallen ill.
R. V.: What a pity! I was going to buy some stamps for my son. Stamp collecting is his hobby, you know.
R.: You can buy them at the post office nearby.
20
R. V.: Is it very close to the hotel? I’d rather do it right away before I forget. Which is the best way there?
R.: When you go out walk as far as the traffic lights, cross the street and walk along the right-hand side. You’ll soon see a high modern building. That’s the post office. You can’t miss it.
R. V.: Thank a lot. You’ve been very helpful.
R.: You are welcome.
IV. FEELING UNWELL
F. R.: You are not looking well, Mr…. Is anything the matter?
R. V.: I’ve been out in the sun too long. I may have a sun stroke. Besides I’ve got a splitting headache.
F. R.: Sit down and rest a bit. There’s a chemist’s across the street. I’ll get you some medicine and something to drink. (Brings the medicine). Here you are. Take this pill and wash it down with an iced coke. It’ll do you good and you’ll soon be quite well again.
R. V.: Thank you. I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve given you.
F. R.: Oh, no trouble at all. Are you better? R. V.: Definitely. We can go now.
F. R.: You should sit quietly for a while, on a bench over there. And take your time.
There’s no need to hurry.
R.V.: I must remember to wear a cap next time I go out.
V. STOPPING IN A BAR DURING A SIGHTSEEING TOUR R. V.: I must confess I’m rather tired.
F. R.: That’s the trouble with sightseeing. You get tired in no time. What are you drinking, Mr…?
R. V.: A beer, please.
F. R.: I’ll have a soda water. My stomach is giving me trouble these days.
R. V.: Cheers!
F. R.: All the best! What’s the beer like?
R. V.: Very good, indeed. It feels good in this heat. Cigarette?
F. R.: Thank you, I like this brand. They are good quality. What will you have? You must be hungry.
R. V.: Not really. A cup of coffee and a sandwich will do. F. R.: The same for me.

PART IV
ETIQUETTE
14. Read and remember the following. Say what the visiting card should be. Describe different types of visits and messages written on cards.
Visiting Cards and Visits
Size and Engraving. The sizes of visiting cards vary, necessarily, according to length of name.
A married woman’s card is usually from 3 to 3 ½ inches wide and from 2 ¼ to 2 ½ inches high, although the smaller of these two dimensions has been for many years in fashion. A man’s card is narrower in shape from 3 to 3 ¼ inches long and from 1 ¼ to 1 5/8 inches high. The cards are made from white to cream-white glazed or unglazed cardboard of medium thickness.
The engraving much in use is shaded Roman, Script is always good form. Other letterings have a temporary vogue.
Titles on Cards. A doctor, military officer in active service and holders of titlebestowing offices all have their cards engraved with their titles: Doctor Henry Gordon; Colonel Thomas Doyale; Judge Horace Rush. But a man holding high degrees does not add their letters to his name and his cards not engraved “professor”, unless he is a public teacher of highest rank who holds an established chair in a university.
The double card reads card reads "Doctor and Mrs. Henry Gordon" etc. It is best form to engrave titles in full.
The double card is also used in paying formal visits.
Fold-over Cards. Fold-over cards known as "informals" are convenient when one wants to write a very brief note but one that requires more space than is afforded by a visiting cards. Fold-over cards are substitutes, for note paper and not to be left in place of visiting cards.
The P.P.C. Card. This is merely a visiting card on which the initials P.P.C. (pour conger – to take leave) are written in the lower left corner. This is usually sent by mail to acquaintances when one is leaving and means nothing except “I’ve gone away – good-bye”.
25
Visits which Everyone Must Pay. Paying visits differs from leaving cards in that you must asked to be received. A visit on condolence should be paid at once to a friend when a death occurs in her immediate family.
A visit of congratulation is paid to a new mother and, of course, it is always very pleasing if you can take a present to the baby.
Messages Written in Cards. "With sympathy "or" with deepest sympathy” is written on your visiting card with flowers sent to a funeral.
The Duration of a Formal Visit. The duration of a formal visit should be in the neighbourhood of fifteen minutes. But if other visitors are announced, the first one on a very formal occasion – may cut her visit short. Or if conversation becomes especially interesting, the visit may be prolonged five minutes or so. On no account must a visitor stay longer than half an hour.
The Typical Visitor.A gentleman visitor always leaves his hat and coat in the hall and also removes and leaves his gloves and rubbers should he be wearing them. A gentleman entering a room in which there are several people who are strangers, shakes hands with the hostess and slightly bows to the others, whether he knows them personally or not. He, of course, shakes hands with any who are friends, and with all men to whom he is introduced but with a lady only if she offers him her hand.
How to enter a Drawing-room. There should be no more difficulty in entering a drawing room of Mrs. Worldly than in entering the sitting-room at home. Perhaps the best instruction would be: take plenty of time. Before entering a room full of people, it is best to pause on the threshold and see where the hostess is and the most unencumbered approach to her. The way not to enter a drawingroom is to dart forward and then stand awkwardly bewildered and looking about in every direction. After greeting the hostess, talk with her for a few minutes and then either join friends of your own or those to whom the hostess introduces you.
How to Sit Gracefully. The perfect position is one that is easy, but dignified. No lady should cross her knees when wearing kneelength skirts that are so lacking in fullness; neither should her foot be thrust out so that her toes are at knee level. An arm akimbo is not a graceful attitude, nor is a twisted spine. Everyone, of course, leans against a chair back (except in a box at the opera and in a ball-room). The proper way for a lady to sit is in the center of her chair, or slightly sideways in the corner of the sofa. She may lean back, of course, and easily, her hands relaxed in her lap, her knees together or if crossed, her foot must not be thrust forward like a pump-handle, or hooked around the chair leg in vine fashion. In a ball dress a lady of
distinction never leans really backward or against anything.
A gentleman may even on very formal occasions lean against the back of his chair, but he must give the appearance of sitting on a chair, not lying at ease on a sofa.
26
Birthday and other Greeting cards. Birthday and anniversary cards and all other messages of friendship are charming evidences of good wishes. But the engraved or printed card intended as a substitute for a written note of thanks is abominably rude and utterly lacking in taste.
15.What can you say about visiting-cards and visits in Russia? Compare them with visiting-cards and visits described above.
16.Translate the following into English and retell the text.
p.p. (pour presenter) – в случае заочного представления нового должностного работника; посылается его руководителем одновременно с визитной карточкой этого работника, на которой ничего не пишется. Ответ дается визитной карточкой без надписей в адрес представляемого лица;
p.f. (pour feliciter) – в случае поздравления. Ответ дается визитной карточкой с подписью p.r.;
p. f. N.A. (pour feliciter nouvel An) – в случае поздравления с Новым Годом.
Ответ дается визитной карточкой с надписью p.r.;
p.c. (pour condolence) – в случае соболезнования. Ответ дается визитной карточкой с надписью p.r.;
p.r. (pour remercier) – с случае выражения благодарности;
17.Read the text given below and answer the following question:
–What forms of invitations are unchangeably fixed?
–What should the size of the card and the lettering be?
–What kinds of cards are used for invitations?
–How is it possible to recall an invitation?
–How is it possible to accept an invitation?
–Describe the formal invitation be telephone.
On the subject of Invitations. The engraved forms of invitations and announcements we use are almost unchangeably fixed.
All formal invitations are recognized as such because they are worded in the third person and their acceptance and regrets are invariably answered in the game form and by hand. The words must be placed on specified line, and centered as evenly as possible. Names of hosts belong on the first line; “request the pleasure of” on the second; names of guests on the third; and so on.
All formal invitations are engraved or written by hand, on white suede-finished cards, either plain or plate-marked.
Formal third-person invitations are sometimes written on paper headed by a very small monogram, but never are engraved on paper headed by an address.
The size of invitation varies with personal preference. The most graceful proportion is three units in height to four in width (or four high by three wide).
The lettering is a matter or personal choice but the plainer the design, the safer. Punctuation is used only where words requiring separation occur on the same line, and in certain abbreviations, such as R.S.V.P.
