UNIT 2

STAYING AT A HOTEL

TEXT

Never before in the history of the world have businessmen traveled so much as they do today. It is not surprising because we are living in a world of growing international trade and expanding economic and technical ties.

Fascinating though it is for tourists, travelling has, however, become the most tiring of all the occupations for many businessmen and experts. Choosing a comfortable hotel to stay at is therefore a matter of some importance.

There are plenty of good hotels, motels and guesthouses in the world conveniently located for major business centres.

Their numerous facilities include both large and small cocktail lounges, ballrooms, banqueting rooms, beauty parlours, barber's shops, and conference-halls equipped with simultaneous multilingual translation systems. There are parking areas which can accommodate a lot of cars.

It might be useful for travelling businessmen and tourists to know that tailor shops, shoe repair shops, laundry and dry cleaning services are available for guests. People in the office help guests book train, air or steamer tickets and rent a car. They are also ready to give all necessary information.

UNIT 3

SIGHTSEEING

TEXT

Those who go abroad either for pleasure or on business are always faced with the dilemma of how to make the best use of their time. It is particularly difficult for a businessman for whom business should come before pleasure as the English saying goes. So before going on a trip you should read up on the country you are going to and think of places of interest visited. A lot depends on your taste, of course. You may, for instance, be keen on art galleries and museums, or prefer to see buildings and monuments, exhibitions and displays.

For their part the receiving party also try to make their guests stay pleasant and entertaining. Very often they arrange an interesting cultural programme that will give the visitors an idea the country’s present and past, its history, culture, customs and traditions. Every third world country has something to be particularly proud of. Ancient temples, monuments, architectural masterpieces and other attractions make a list of sights not to be missed by visitors.

CONVERSATIONS

I. ON THE FIRST SIGHTSEEING TOUR FOREIGN REPRESENTATIVE: How are you this morning, Mr.…?

RUSSIAN VISITOR: Oh, I had a good night’s rest after the flight, thank you. And the hotel is really good.

F. R.: We are in the centre now. I’ll be taking you for a ride around the city.

R. V.: Good. The city looks different in daylight.

F. R.: Yes, the busy central area is not very big but it’s quite modern with its public buildings, shops, picture-houses, theatres and restaurants. Everything is within walking distance of your hotel.

R. V.: Thank you, Mr. … It’s very kind of you.

F. R.: Not at all. Look, that green building on the right is the city railway terminal.

R. V.: And what’s that tall building with a spire?

F. R.: That’s the Municipal Hall. This is the main road leading to the old part of the city.

R. V.: That building looks like a hospital.

F. R.: You’ve guessed right. I must say the city is becoming an industrial centre.

There are quite a few plants – a cement plant, a fertilizer plant/ a power station, to mention but a few. All in the outskirts, of course.
