Настоящее учебное пособие предназначено для студентов Московской государственной академии водного транспорта, обучающихся по специальности «Судовождение», достаточно овладевших основами грамматики английского языка. Шутки и короткие рассказы, представленные в данном пособии, направлены на реализацию потребностей обучаемого в самостоятельном чтении для удовольствия, однако, они могут быть использованы в учебном процессе как основа для игровых ситуаций и обсуждений.

Цель данного пособия – расширение знаний специальной профессиональной лексики английского языка для судоводителей и увеличения их словарного запаса. Оно может быть использовано для занятий на старших курсах студентов специальности «Судовождение» очного (Группа СВФ-7, СВФ-8, СВФ-9, СВТ-6,СВТ-7) и заочного отделений, на факультативных занятиях, а также на специальных курсах английского языка для моряков.

ПРЕДИСЛОВИЕ

Настоящее учебное пособие предназначается для старших курсов судоводительских факультетов морских учебных заведений, курсанты которых овладели основами английского языка. Оно может быть использовано на факультативных занятиях, а также самостоятельно изучающими английский язык.

Шутки и короткие рассказы рассчитаны на реализацию потребностей обучаемого в самостоятельном чтении для удовольствия, однако они могут быть использованы в учебном процессе как основа для игровых ситуаций и обсуждений.

Preface

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, as the old English saying goes. The same applies to any process of studying, Maritime English including. To fill this gap in the curricula we have complied this manual: the Senior Teacher of the department of foreign languages of the Moscow State Academy of the Water Transport Rubtsova I.A. (texts and exercises) and Ass. Prof. of the same department, PhD Vokhmyanin S.N. (the idea, general supervision end edition).

The manual is intended to improve speech skills of advanced students of maritime educational institutions and may be used within the framework of both obligatory curriculum and after classes.

The scope of the manual is supposed to be enlarged and enhanced in future after testing the first edition.

Ah.. the joy of sleeping off those extra "just 5 minutes" after getting a wake up call for change of watch ... and the embarrassment of finding that those "5 Minutes" magically turned into 10 minutes past the watch!!

SAVED BY THE SUN

Many years ago when I was Third Mate on a reefer running between the Bristol Channel and the West Indies and well past the Azores outward bound, I came on watch on a bright sunny day and soon settled down to the routine of morning sights. I estimated the visibility to be good and that there was nothing in sight. It was fortuitous that the sun happened to be right ahead of the ship. I strolled out onto the bridge wing and "brought" the sun down to the horizon and there, through the telescope and shades of the sextant, I saw a ship coming the other way. As we were doing about 22 knots, I moved rather faster into the wheelhouse and, trying to look nonchalant, altered course to starboard.

ROAST LION OR PORK?!

One day on the menu was Roast lion of pork. First trip cadet: "What's this roast lion of pork?" Asst stwd: "Sorry, it's the Steward's typing error."

2nd Mate: "Yes it's roast lion OR pork. Roast lion for me please." Others: "Roast lion for me." "Lion please!"

Cadet: "I'm not eating lion. I'll have the cold meat and salad" Soon, cadet eating his salad, "I don't know how you can eat lion."

3rd Eng: "We always have it when we're on the coast. Great African delicacy."

Later.... Cadet writing letter. "Dear Mother, today we had roast lion. It's a great African delicacy"

Letter from shipping company to Captain. "Dear Sir, Our Chairman has received a complaint from an MP complaining of the serving of lion in the saloon. Will you provide an explanation and ensure that this outlandish practice ceases forthwith."

"Dear sir, It was roast loin, not roast lion, Your obedient servant, Capt."
