II.Сожаление относительно того, что уже случилось в прошлом
(соотносится с third conditional):
после wish употребляется:
●Past Perfect (had + V3) – I wish I hadn’t eaten so much. I wish I had known that
Kate was ill.
Данные предложения можно трансформировать в условные третьего типа:
I wish I had known that Kate was ill => If I had known that Kate was ill, I would have visited her in the hospital.
III.Пожелание относительно изменения ситуации в будущем, недовольство (как правило, по отношению к другим людям)
после wish употреблялется would + V:
●I wish you would stop lying to me.
●I wish she would come to the conference.
●The teacher wishes the students would stop talking so loudly.
Для большей эмоциональной окраски вместо I wish используется структура If only: If only I knew the answer… If only we could go to Iceland…
Предложения, выражающие пожелания и сожаления, на русский язык могут переводиться с помощью следующих структур:
●Я бы хотел (-а), чтобы…
●Как жаль, что… (антонимичный вариант перевода)
●Ах, если бы… Если бы только… (вариант перевода для предложений с If only…)
Например, I wish it was not raining now – Я бы хотел, чтобы сейчас не шел дождь / Как жаль, что сейчас идет дождь.

Ex.1. Translate the sentences with I wish… / If only… structures.
1.I wish I had attended the lecture yesterday. My groupmates told me it was fascinating.
2.I wish you had told me about this task before. Now I lack the time to do it properly.

3.If only I had prepared better for my engineering final exams. My total score is not enough to apply to the university of my dreams.
4.My 7-year old sister wishes she could solve the Maths equations.
5.I wish I had been invited to the conference on Engineering.
6.I wish the professors would stop giving us so many tasks. I’m so exhausted and uneager to devote time and effort to them.
7.My brother wishes he was more intelligent and not so slow on the uptake.
8.If only I could speak Italian… If I could, I would be able to go to Italy and participate in the International Conference on Nuclear Physics.
9.Michael wishes he was more confident. Now he doesn’t feel self-assured enough.
10.If only you were my neighbour! If it was true, you could explain complicated things to me.
Ex.2. Rewrite the sentences, using ‘I wish…’ or ‘If only…’ structures.
1.I didn’t have a vacation last summer.
2.It’s a pity my parents don’t have enough money to pay for my college studies.
3.My brother didn’t follow his doctor’s advice.
4.I cannot understand the topic – it is so difficult.
5.I forgot to take my notes with me. If I had them, I could revise before the test.
Ex.3. Translate the sentences from Russian into English. Use I wish… / If only… structures.
1.Я бы хотел работать удаленно.
2.Жаль, что у меня сейчас нет доступа в интернет.
3.Я бы хотел уметь разбираться в механике.
4.Как жаль, что я не поступил в университет в прошлом году.
5.Она хотела бы быть сейчас в Японии на знаменитой выставке технологий.
