Problems of youth

There are a lot of problems in our world that people have to face and try to cope with. And no matter how old you are, you will still face difficulties in your life.

A teenager is a person from thirteen to nineteen years of age. And young people here face as many difficulties as grown-up people do. These are spending your free time, choosing a good friend, how to deal with your parents and the classmates, finding your place in this world, first love and relations with beloved, choosing where to study after finishing school, alcohol and drugs.

One of the most important problems is “a generation gap” – the problem of fathers and sons. Teens usually want to be independent and show this to our parents. And this is kind of depressing when parents try to control everything that young people do. Parents usually do not understand the clothes that teens wear and the music that their children listen to. They have different tastes. Moreover, this is rather difficult to start listening to each other and understanding

33

each other. Nowadays there are a lot of different things that young people want to try. They are alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and it is not easy to manage them, especially for teenagers. Most teenagers try such things because their friends do and if they do not, they are not considered to be cool. Some young people take drugs or drink alcohol because they are bored and they have nothing to do. Some of them do such things because their life is hard. These bad habits cause health problems in future (for girls especially).

Nevertheless there are many ways of keeping away from it. One of them is organized sport, which changes young people's world-outlook and prevents them from the fatal temptation.

Another huge problem for youth nowadays is violence in schools.

Schools play a major role in teaching life skills to young minds and their endeavor must be recognized. It is reasonable to expect that these sacred places of learning would prove as safe havens for children. But increasing cases of crime in school makes adults lose their sleep. No, these are no minor cases of bullying but serious full-fledged crimes like stabbings, fighting and suicides.

It’s no secret that many teens are big fans of video games and the Internet. But for some young people, what started as an interest in technology, a means of entertainment, or a way to keep in touch with friends may morph into a serious behavior disorder. Teen Internet addiction is much more than just a strong desire to be online. As is the case with other behavior disorders — such as compulsive gambling — teen Internet addiction is marked by a progressive loss of control over one’s ability to avoid, regulate, or limit a behavior. In this case, the behavior in question is spending time on the Internet.

As you see, it is very difficult to be young nowadays, as, indeed, it always was. But you can be young only once, and some wonderful things can happen only when you’re young. So, it is better to enjoy your youth while it lasts.

An interview

I n t e r v i e w e r : Do you have any problems? M i c h a e l : Yes, I do.

I n t e r v i e w e r : What are they?

M i c h a e l : I think, the main problem is the misunderstanding between my parents and me, the so called generation gap.

I n t e r v i e w e r : What causes it?

M i c h a e l : I think the root of the problem is the difference in years. They are older than me, they have got accustomed to caring after me. They do not see I become older every year. On the other hand, quite often there is some sense in their words, but the problem is the modern young people simply do not behave that way.

I n t e r v i e w e r : Is there a solution to this problem?

M i c h a e l : Yes, there is. There are several tips of getting along well. First of all, I always try to keep my temper, not to cry or shout. Second, I try to explain my feelings. I am happy because I can be sincere with my parents. They do not punish me for being sincere. Third, if I have to swallow a bitter pill, I do it.

I n t e r v i e w e r : Do you have the problem of spending your spare time?

M i c h a e l : I have very little spare time because I work hard on school subjects. The subjects in which I shall take entrance exams are especially important. Then I have to help about the

35

house. But many young people can not find a thing to do, can not occupy themselves with something useful. That's why they gather in big companies, drink beer and smoke. They kill time discussing friends and clothes. That's dangerous and useless for their future life and career.

I n t e r v i e w e r : What can you say about drugs?

M i c h a e l : Now it is the problem of all people, not only of the young generation. Young people begin to use drugs because they do not understand the danger and ruin their health and lives.

I n t e r v i e w e r : Do you think that young people will have to solve many problems which our society struggles with now?

M i c h a e l : Yes, I believe so.

At the university

T o d d : Hi, Jane. How are you?

J a n e : Hi, there. I’m fine! And how are you?

T o d d : I’m very well, thank you. Haven’t seen you for ages, although we study at the same educational institution.

J a n e : Our university is huge, you know. First of all, we study at different institutes. Secondly, together with our group we moved to another building last month. I’m rarely seen at the central building.

39

T o d d : I see. Then what are you doing here today? J a n e : I came to borrow some books at the library.

T o d d : Do you fancy having lunch at the university canteen? J a n e : Yes, with pleasure. Do they have coffee there?

T o d d : I’m sure they do. I like our canteen. You can have both a quick snack there and a substantial meal if you want.

J a n e : I’d prefer a quick snack. All I want right now is a cup of black coffee and a cinnamon bun.

T o d d : Me too. So, let’s go there and chat a little bit. You’ll tell me what’s new in your institute and I’ll tell you about the changes here.

J a n e : Sounds good. In fact, there aren’t many changes there. Last week we participated at the city tournament in chess. I should say our university team was on a good level.

T o d d : Did you win?

J a n e : No, we didn’t. But we took the second place. We also participated in one contest, it was female volleyball. The team of our institute won.

T o d d : That’s great! Congratulations!

J a n e : How are you going to celebrate this New Year?

T o d d : Our group has already prepared a short, but funny performance, which will be followed by a «sweet table» and dancing. Would you like to join us?

J a n e : When is it hapenning? T o d d : Next Saturday.

J a n e : I’m sorry, I can’t. We are also having a group gathering on this day. Our tutor promised to invite some theater actors who are her good friends. They are supposed to act out an interesting performance on the topic of Christmas.

T o d d : I see. Sound good. If I wasn’t busy on that day, I would come to see it.

J a n e : It starts at 6 pm, you can still be on time.

T o d d : You’re right. Our group meeting is at 2 pm, so I can definitely make it.

J a n e : Great! See you next week then. T o d d : See you. Bye.
