Leisure time

H a r r y : What do you do in your leisure time? S u e : It depends on mood.

H a r r y : For example?

S u e: I enjoy music, chatting, reading books. H a r r y : Anything else?

S: Well... I can sew a little, and I knit rather well. But I wouldn't call it a hobby. I do it because sometimes I do not see anything I'd like to wear available in the shops, so I sew or knit the thing I like. What are you crazy about?

H a r r y : I have only one hobby. S u e : And that's…

H a r r y : That's collecting postcards. S u e : What a bore you are!

H a r r y : For me, this is the best enjoyment. One of my friends sent me a postcard with a steam train for my birthday. Since then I have started collecting postcards with trains. Later I got an interest in learning about transport. I also take photos of trains and planes.

S u e : What can people collect but postcards?

H a r r y : Oh, there are many collectable things. For example, bottles, beer mugs, video films and computer games. Mark Twain once wrote a story about a hobbyist who collected pipes, autographs, bells, even pieces of broken bricks!

S u e : Isn't it a bit expensive enjoyment?

H a r r y : Yes, it is but you can manage somehow.

My Favourite Book

A l a n : I have a question for you, Sonia.

S o n i a : Go on, I’m listening.

A l a n : Do you like reading?

S o n i a : Yes, I enjoy it. I’ve read many books and stories. How about you?

A l a n : I also like reading, but I haven’t read much. One of my favourite books is «The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes» by Arthur Conan Doyle.

S o n i a :Ah, that’s a great book. I’d say English classics.

A l a n : You’re right. The main hero is a real Englishman with refined manners and slightly snobby character.

S o n i a : That’s true, but he is charming and he’s got a subtle sense of humor. Together with his friend and colleague Dr. Watson they’ve solved a great number of crimes.

A l a n : They are a great team.

S o n i a : I wonder how many books about Sherlock Holmes are there? I’ve read only two of them. A l a n : As far as I know, there are twelve stories. They don’t come in chronological order, but they all have something in common.

S o n i a : What do you mean?

A l a n : The main characters, of course: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

S o n i a : There are some other key characters as well. Don’t you think?

A l a n : I know. Take Mrs. Hudson, for example. What a charming lady. She is the one who rents her flat on Baker Street out for these two brilliant detectives.

S o n i a : There is also one character who is Sherlock’s bitter enemy. I mean Jim Moriarty.

A l a n : How about Irene Adler?

S o n i a : She is a fictional character who is frequently used as a romantic interest for Holmes.

A l a n : What’s your favorite story anyway?

S o n i a : «A Scandal in Bohemia». And yours?

A l a n : I like «A Case of Identity». It’s an intricate story with a sophisticated plot. S o n i a : What’s it about? I haven’t read it.

A l a n : It’s about one young lady who was condemned to spinsterhood by her stepfather who wanted to ensure he continued access to her inheritance.

S o n i a : How did Holmes solve this case?

A l a n : As usually with the help of his favourite method of deduction. S o n i a : I see. Sounds interesting. I should read or watch it someday.

Moving pictures. The history of cinema

In 1893 at the Chicago World’s Fair Thomas Edison introduced to the public two pioneering inventions: the Kinetograph, the first practical moving picture camera, and the Kinetoscope. The latter was a cabinet in which a continuous loop of celluloid film was backlit by an incandescent lamp and seen through a magnifying lens.

At about the same time, in France, Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the cinematograph, a portable, three-in-one device: camera, printer, and projector. They quickly became Europe’s

25

main producers with such vignettes as «Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory» and «The Sprinkler Sprinkled» (both 1895).

The movies of the time would usually present a single scene, authentic or staged, of everyday life. The standard length of a film remained one reel (about ten to fifteen minutes), through the first decade of the century. The cinematic techniques were hardly developed: no editing and usually no camera movement. But the novelty of realistically moving photographs was enough for a motion picture industry.

In 1902 Paris Georges Méliès created «A Trip to the Moon», possibly the first movie to portray space travel. He pioneered many of the fundamental SFX techniques used in movies for most of the twentieth century.

Hollywood was established in 1912, when a group of New York film producers decided to open a new studio in California. Hollywood soon attracted film actors and technicians from all over the country. These cinema pioneers made thousands of black and white films – comedies, tragedies, fantasies, romances and historical dramas. This was the silent era – the era of Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentine, Clara Bow, Douglas Fairbanks and Buster Keaton. It was called

«silent» because there was no recorded sound. Instead, the actors’ dialogue appeared on cards shown every 15 or 20 seconds.

Recorded sound ended the silent era in 1927. That’s when Al Jolson both spoke and sang in «The Jazz Singer». The impact on cinemagoers was enormous. They loved «The Jazz Singer» and demanded more and more talking pictures. The first sound film «Lights of New York» appeared in 1928. The first colour films were made in the 1930s, but the black-and-white films are made even today.

Nowadays we can see different kinds of films. There are ones, which are dedicated to the life of the people, to the present and to the history of a country. There are also feature films, documentaries, comedies, thrillers, dramas and detective films.

J i m : At the nearest cinema house they show a film of the year.

A l a n : My wife and I have already seen it. We enjoyed it immensely.

J i m : Here is a good programme. They show two main pictures, a French film and American. I don't think you have seen them.

A l a n : I have seen neither of them. Shall we be able to obtain seats? That movie house is always full.

J i m : Seats are not reserved at that movie house, but I am sure we shall be able to get in. Shall we buy balcony seats, if stall seats are not available?

A l a n : Please don't. I hate seeing a film from the balcony, it is too far from the screen. I wear glasses.

J i m : Ok. The movie starts in ten minutes. There are many comfortable seats in the foyer. We can wait there and enjoy a cigarette in the meantime?

A l a n : Now, that we have seen both films. What do you think of the films?

J i m : In the French film the actors spoke with a slight French accent. The acting was faultless, but the action developed very slowly. Don’t you agree with me?

A l a n : Yes, I do. I like more the English film. The plot was very interesting. The camera work was excellent.

A healthy diet is an important part of staying healthy, too. This diet contains reduced amounts of cholesterol, fat, sugar and salt. You should eat fruit and vegetable because they contain a lot of important vitamins. Fruit and vegetables also have fiber, which is very important for our health.
