Interviewer: Is solitude very important to you? PDJ: Oh yes, I've never been lonely in all my life. Interviewer: How extraordinary! Never?

PDJ: No, never.

Interviewer: You're very lucky.

Someone once said that there's a splinter of ice at the heart of every writer.

PDJ: Yes, I think this is true. I don't know whether it's Graham Greene who said that. Whoever said it, I think what he meant was that the writer can stand aside from experience, his own suffering up to an extent, other people's suffering, and look at it, watch it happening. There is this detachment. It's curious because in creative writing there is both total involvement but there is still detachment, and I find for most of my life that I can detach myself from a great many experiences and look at myself experiencing them. And I realise that the one experience I couldn't detach myself from would be the death of one of my children. And I realise that there are obviously experiences which would overwhelm everyone. But very often, a writer can appear to stand aside and this detachment makes people feel there is a splinter of ice in the heart.

Interviewer: Do you think that's a strength or a weakness?

PDJ: I think it's a strength, but I think it has its dangers. As C.P. Snow, a writer not perhaps much regarded now, said in one of his books that there's great dignity in being an observer, that if you do it for too long you lose your soul. And I think there is a danger. I think one needs the involvement. It's possible I think for certain people to feel, writers particularly, that life is a messy business and it's better to stand on the sidelines, observing the mess and recording the mess. But I think occasionally, we have to join in and get as messy and dirty as all other human beings. And indeed we don't often have the choice, I mean, this is what happens to us, so we have to.

Ex. 10. Think about how creative people go about their work. In your groups discuss the following questions in relation to the people on your list.

b)Does he or she need solitude?

c)Does he or she need detachment from reality or involvement in it?

d)Does the artist have a complete idea of the work before he or she begins or does the work of art 'take over' and have a life of its own?

51

e)How do creators go about the practical business of creating?

f)How different from other people are they?

g)Can a hobby grow into profession?

Compare your notes with another group.

Ex. 17. Translate into English

Ex. 18. Translate into English

Ex. 20. Listen to Mike, Julie and Bruce talking about their hobbies, and make notes in the chart about their activities.

Hobby

Advantages

Disadvantages

Mike

Julie

Bruce

MIKE: It's a very expensive hobby. It's going to cost about three and a half thousand, but you don't have to pay all at once. You know, you can pay each lesson as, as you go along. There's quite a lot of studying to do. In fact you're not allowed to go solo until you've got your air law exam and. . . But I enjoy the studying — that's one of the things that's, you know, been very, very exciting. And you have to do a lot of exams. Of course, you can't fly unless you're fairly fit and you have to have a medical exam. In fact you can't go solo either until you've got your medical certificate.

JULIE: They're fascinating creatures and it's one of the hobbies that, once you get involved in you want to know more about, and however long you study bees and bee-keeping you'll never know

59

everything about the insects. They have a, quite a unique lifestyle. And of course there's always the benefits of taking the honey off at the end of the honey season, which makes a little profit, although it's quite an expensive hobby. You need quite a lot of equipment. The hives themselves are quite expensive, unless you're a good woodworker and can make them yourselves, and the extractors and things. But it keeps you occupied throughout the whole year because, while you're harvesting the honey in the summer, you're making up the hives and the frames in the winter, ready for the following season.

BRUCE: Well it's, it's something that anybody can participate in, from the keenest person like myself, who travels all over the world to see the birds, up to somebody looking out of the window in their kitchen, and there's so much involved in it. It gets you to places where you wouldn't normally go — i.e. some wild places, very remote places, because birds are attracted to the quieter, remoter places, usually – for example, up in, up into mountains and on river estuaries where not many people go, and also you meet such smashing people. Generally, well almost entirely, I think people interested in birds are nice sort of people.

Ex. 21. Reading

1. The information below is about someone's hobby but the sentences are in the wrong order. Number each sentence (1–7) to indicate the correct order. Look carefully for linking words (e.g. and) which will help you.

a)This is quite difficult at times, as I have a really bad memory.

b)There are loads of rehearsals, as well, which take up nearly all my spare time.

c)It's something I had never thought of doing, but then I saw an advert in the local newspaper, saying that they needed extras for a crowd scene, in a film they were making in my town.

d)In fact, if I were younger I would even think of turning professional!

e)I found I really enjoyed the experience, so afterwards I went for an audition at my local dramatic society.

f)However, it also has its really good points – you have a lot of fun preparing for and putting on the productions, and I've met so many people and made friends from different walks of life.
