Preface
The main purpose of this manual is to present a simple and brief textbook on educational psychology, as most of students take to the study of the subject withoutanadequateunderstandingofthe common mental activities or of the terms used to describe them. This has been found true not only in the case of graduates but also in the case of postgraduates. Therefore, it is to meet the needs of both types of students that Elements of Educational Psychology has been written for.
The textbook attempts to explain the broad facts and principles of educational psychology shorn of speculative theories. It is not meant for advanced students but seeks to help only those who are preparing for the teaching profession. In dealing with several mental activities, functions, their growth and development, the educational situation has been presented in accordance with our schools.
The book contains a minimum number of quotations and references. They may give a scholarly appearance to a book but they are apt to be confusing to students who take to the study of a subject for the first time.
Chapter 1
Psychology and Education
The Nature and Concept of Psychology
Psychology has recently been given a unique status of recognition as a positive science due to the expansion of its boundaries. Now it is recognized as an independent subject of study.
The word “Psychology” is derived from two Greek words “psyche” and “logos”. “Psyche” means “soul” and “logos” means “science of”. Initially psychology was taken as the “science of soul”. As we know, science means a thorough or all-round study of a thing. But there is some contradiction as “soul” is purely metaphysical in existence. Nobody in the world can give any satisfactory explanation as to the true nature of “soul”. Thus, “science of soul” is somewhat impracticable and unthinkable as well.
In order to resolve the problem of defining psychology, a group of scholars came to the conclusion that “psyche” could mean “consciousness”. But psychology goes beyond human consciousness, as it dealswith certainactivities in sub-conscious and unconscious statesof human mind like dreams etc. So, this definition of psychology can be considered as unsatisfactory.
Another group of psychologists contended that the mentality of the individual manifested itself in the form of different behaviors and could be observable. Then psychology is the science of behavior. But individual’s behavior is influenced by certain inherent factors like sentiments, emotion, physical and mental illness etc.
From the above discussion, it is clear that no definition or meaning of psychology is typical and satisfactory. Different famous psychologists have interpreted psychology in their own ways. Some of them need to be highlighted here for better understanding of the discipline.
R. Woodworth: “Psychology undertakes to make a scientific study of the individual considered as a unit, as he really is in his dealings with other individuals and with the world”.
