Daphne du Maurier

Daphne du Maurier leads several lives: as Lady Browning, wife of Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Arthur Montague Browning, Treasurer to the Duke of Edinburgh, she moves in London's highest social circles; as mother of three children, she has a full and rich domestic life; as a writer, she puts in long, secluded hours in a bare hut on the grounds of her beautiful old house, Menabilly, which has appeared, thinly disguised, in several of her novels. Miss du Maurier, daughter of the former matinee idol Sir Gerald du Maurier, and granddaughter of the author of Trilby and Peter Ibbetson, is a fantastically successful novelist, she is extraordinarily pretty, and she has a low opinion of herself as an author - in spite of having written a dozen internationally known books, including Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel (Condensed Books, Summer 1952).
