UNIT IV. A MAN’S HOME IS HIS CASTLE

Ex. 1. Read and translate the text.

Welcome to Robert Ron Howard

Bob’s parents purchased their home in 1997 in Arch Cape near Portland, Oregon. This home was originally built as a summer cabin. Bob’s parents completely renovated the home inside and outside. Now it is a spacious beach home facing the water.

The main floor has an airy, spacious kitchen and dining room area with a deck adjoining it. There is a lovely view of flowers outside. They are planted by

Bob’s mother. The Howards keep a grill, a table and chairs there. On warm days they like relaxing and having dinner outdoor.

24

On the upper floor, there is a comfortable living room with a gas fireplace, a guest room and a bathroom, a study, a master bedroom, Bob’s bedroom and two full bathrooms.

The lower floor has a family room, two children’s bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms here are occupied by Bob’s sisters and form their sense of independence. There is a laundry and a storage room in the basement as well.

The home has a generator in case of power outrages, a hot water heater, a stove and a smoke alarms on every level. A two-car garage is attached to the house. Bob’s home has electric base-board heating available, but the house is heated mainly by oil heat. The home is surrounded by a well kept lawn, flower and vegetable gardens and a fenced back yard.

The Howards love their home very much. It’s cozy, sunny and cheerful. They like spending time together. And their guest cottage, which is right behind the house is always occupied by grandparents, other relatives or friends.

Arch Cape is a good place to live and raise children. There are a lot of cultural and sport opportunities here. And it is not far from the city with museums, concerts and shopping centers.

Ex. 2. Say using there is/are that in Bob’s home there is/are (no) the following:

Model: Балконы – There are no balconies in Bob’s home.

Чердак, современные удобства, деревья, балконы, телефон, водопровод, кондиционер, внутренний двор, подъездная дорожка, плавательный бассейн, ворота, комната для спортивных тренировок, подвал, лифт, эскалатор, библиотека.

Ex. 3. Ask questions about your friends’ homes. Use there is/are. Ex. 4. Insert is or are. Read and translate the dialogue.

Harry Smith’s Visit to Robert Howard’s Home

Harry: It’s so wonderful you have invited me to visit your home. My business trip to New York could be so exhaustive if I hadn’t joined you after all.

Bob: But you have made a deal, haven’t you?

Harry: Yes, and now I can have a week rest. I really need some time to relax.

Bob: I am sure you will enjoy my home. Here is your room. It’s just next to mine.

Harry: What a wonderful room! There … everything I need in this room. Bob: There … only a bed, a dresser, a changing table, rocking chairs,

a TV set and lamps in it. We appreciate spacious rooms. There … not much furniture in our rooms either.

25

Harry: … there a bathroom?

Bob: Yes, there … . There … also a large double closet. You can hang up your clothes here.

Harry: And what … there outside? The windows face a nice park. Bob: It’s a city park called King Lion. The park contains playground

equipment, a baseball field, a basketball court. You see, there … many opportunities to participate in sports and arts activities.

Harry: Sounds amazing. Can I run there in the mornings?

Bob: Sure. I will join you jogging if you join me swimming. We have a good access to the beach as well.

Harry: I see I’ll have happy time here. I’d like to thank you for inviting me.

Ex. 5. Harry has written a letter about his business trip to New York to his Boss. Complete his sentences with: is/are, is only one, is too much, isn’t enough, isn’t anywhere, are too many, aren’t enough, are only three.

1.We have a very crowded program. There … points in our time-table.

2.But there … matters I am going to discuss in details.

3.There … time to call often because we are too busy.

4.There … strident advertising around our talks, but there … TV report which gives really serious information data about our company’s intentions.

5.I have realized that there … skilled specialists in our firm who can take part in this project. And soon we could face a shortage of experts.

6.There … to place our head-quarter. To tell the truth, there … no need to because our partners advice to set it up in Oregon or Connecticut.

7.… there any questions or orders to me?

Ex. 6. This is what Harry and Bob think of Arch Cape. Match the columns and make up two separate lists of their ideas.

1)

There aren’t enough …

a) … to listen to opera as I often do in London

There should be more …

during my university period.

2)

There isn’t anywhere …

b) … sun and space.

There should be …

… sunny weather. I miss London rains.

3)

There are too many …

c) … parks with camping, fishing and hiking.

There should be only one …

… such areas to attract families of the

community.

4)

There is too much ..,

d) … tourists.

There should be less …

… hotel to receive them as Arch Cape is a

quiet and safe place to raise a family.

5)

There is only one …

e) … a rushed busy atmosphere of London.
