Предисловие

Настоящий сборник упражнений подготовлен для студентов второго курса специальностей «МЭ», «МКД», «ММА», «ММ», «ЭУПТ», «УАВД».

Сборник составлен на основе учебника «Mosaic», изданного в США.

Цель упражнений, включенных в сборник, - активизировать знание лексического материала и выработать лексические и коммуникативные навыки.

Сборник сохраняет структуру учебника, задания располагаются по главам.

К каждой главе дается список слов с дефинициями на английском языке с целью обогащения и расширения словарного запаса студентов.

Всборник включены следующие упражнения:

-дать определения словам;

-выбрать правильное значение слова;

-закончить предложение;

-вставить пропущенные предлоги;

-перефразировать предложения, используя активную лексику;

-подобрать синонимы;

-подобрать антонимы;

-перевести с русского языка на английский язык и др.

Основная цель сборника – активизация употребления лексических единиц,

встречающихся в текстах для чтения.

CHAPTER 1: NEW CHALLENGES

Part 1: Living in the USA

Words to remember:

Experience (v) if you experience something, it happens to you, or you feel it

Impact (n) a powerful effect that something, especially something new, has on a situation or person

Extreme (n) the largest possible amount or degree of something

Vary (v) to change or cause something to change in amount or level, especially from one occasion to another

Moderate (adj) neither small nor large but between the two; clearly within the limits of a range of possibilities: moderate growth/inflation. Synonym Medium-sized; moderately (adv)

Humid (adj) (of air and weather conditions) containing extremely small drops of water in the air; humidity (n)

Restless (adj) unwilling or unable to stay still or to be quiet and calm, because you are worried or bored; restlessly (adv)

Crowd onto/into smth - if people crowd or are crowded into a place, they fill it completely

Hike (v) to go for a long walk in the countryside

Head for 1) to move in a particular direction; 2) to be likely to experience a bad situation soon, because of your own actions or behaviour

Jam (v) to be unable to move. Synonym: Stick

Insult (n) an offensive remark or action: insult to my intelligence Insult (v)

Blunt (adj) saying what you think without trying to be polite or caring about other people's feelings. Synonym: Rude

Laundry (n) 1 the dirty clothes and sheets which need to be, are being or have been washed 2 a business which washes clothes, sheets, etc. for customers; launderette MAINLY UK (US TRADEMARK laundromat) a shop where you pay to use the machines there which will wash and dry clothes

Stigma (n) feeling of shame or dishonour

Chore (n) job or piece of work which is often boring or unpleasant but needs to be done regularly Menial (adj) DISAPPROVING describes work that is boring, tiring and given a low social

value: a menial job/task

To take pride in smth/smb to feel very pleased about something or someone you are closely connected with

Accomplishment (n) 1 something that is successful, or that is achieved after a lot of work or effort; 2 the completion of something

To cater to smb/smth - to try to satisfy a need, especially an unpopular or generally unacceptable need

Thoroughly (adv) in detail and carefully. Synonym: Carefully Assume (v) to accept something to be true without question or proof

Heritage (n) features belonging to the culture of a particular society, such as traditions, languages or buildings, which still exist from the past and which have a historical importance

Awkward (adj) 1) causing inconvenience, anxiety or embarrassment: an awkward

position/situation. Synonym: Inconvenient 2) embarrassed or nervous. Synonym:

Anxious

Custom (n) 1) (TRADITION) a way of behaving or a belief which has been established for a long time: a local/ancient custom 2) (USUAL ACTIVITY) something you usually do; Compare habit (n) something which you do often and

regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing it: I always buy the same brand

of toothpaste just out of habit.

To an extent – the expression is used to show how far smth is true or how great an effect it has

Do –it-yourself – the activity of making or repairing thing yourself instead of paying someone to do for you : DIY

EXERCISES

1. Translate the following words and expressions, define them in English.

5. Translate into English:

Part 2: My Country

Words to remember:

Startle (v) to do something unexpected which surprises and sometimes worries a person or animal

different things, people, etc. that combine to form smth; the way in which they combine Melting pot (n) a place where many different people and ideas exist together, often mixing and producing something new: a cultural melting pot

Cover smth up - to prevent from being noticed or becoming publicly known

Background (n) your family and your experience of education, living conditions,

wealth, etc. Synonym: Experience: a background in publishing

Tend toward (v) to be likely to behave in a particular way or have a particular characteristic

Moderation (n) the quality of being moderate; freedom from excess; restraint Social attitudes - feelings or opinions relating to society and living together in an organized way, or a way of behaving that is caused by this Uprising (n)(ALSO rising) an act of opposition, sometimes using violence, by many people in one area of a country against those who are in power

Fit into - If something or someone fits into a category, classification, or explanation,

you can see that they belong to it or are a part of it and you understand why:

Outward (adj) [before noun] relating to how people, situations or things seem to be, rather than how they are inside

Display (n) an occasion when someone shows a particular feeling, quality, or attitude: display of: displays of smth . Synonym: Show, demonstration

Outgoing (adj) APPROVING (of a person) friendly and energetic and finding it easy and enjoyable to be with others. Synonym: Friendly:

personality.

Bilingual (adj) (of a person) able to use two languages for communication, or (of a thing) using or involving two languages: Compare monolingual; multilingual; trilingual

Welcome (v) to meet and speak to someone in a friendly way when they come to the place where you are. Synonym: Meet

Newcomer (n) someone who has recently arrived in a place or recently become involved in an activity

Sense (v) to be aware of something or experience it without being able to explain exactly how

Put one’s finger on smth - to discover the exact reason why a situation is the way it is, especially when something is wrong

Countryman (n) a person from your own country Pronounced (adj) – very obvious or noticeable
