.pdfРАЗДЕЛ II. ГЕОГРАФИЧЕСКОЕ ПОЛОЖЕНИЕ И ЭКОНОМИКА США (THE USA)
The USA is one of the unique and amazing countries. It was founded two hundred years ago, in 1776.
The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada and China). It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska in the north and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometres. The USA borders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south.
The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, a special federal area where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The largest state is Alaska. Major cities include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and others. The population of the country is about 260 million. Americans are made up of nearly all races and nations, including Chinese and Native Americans, Europeans and Africans.
Americans are often called the nation of immigrants because at present the US continues to take more immigrants than any other country in the world. America is often called the "Melting Pot", the "Salad Bowl" or the "Pizza", because many of the earlier immigrants have been assimilated. The official national language is English.
The American flag is known as 'The Stars and Stripes'. The 13 stripes represent the original number of states in 1776. The 50 stars represent today's total. The national symbol is the American eagle. It appears on the Great Seal of the United States and on some coins.
The USA is a country of great contrasts and similarities. If we look at the map of the USA, we can see lowlands and mountains. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. The Rocky Mountains divide the country into two parts – the East and the West. The Appalachian Mountains run along the Atlantic coast of the country. They are ancient, strongly destroyed mountains of no great height. The highest peak in the USA is Mount McKinley, which is located in Alaska.
America's largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Great Lakes on the border with Canada are the largest and deepest in the USA. The largest lake is Lake Superi-
71
or. Between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, is the Niagara River, with the powerful Niagara Falls (50 metres).
The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has a subtropical climate.
America is rich in mineral resources. They vary from precious gold and rare uranium to common lead and zinc. Coal, oil, iron, copper, and other minerals are abundant. They form basis of modern industry.
The USA is a highly developed industrial country with various branches of heavy industry prevailing. It is the world's leading producer of copper and oil and the world's second producer of iron ore and coal.
West Virginia is the nation‟s leading coal producer. Houston is the city of the nation‟s largest petro-chemical complex.
Engineering occupies the leading position in the US economy: automobile industry with the main centre of Detroit, aviation and rocket industries in San Diego, Los Angeles, Dallas and shipbuilding industry in Boston, New York, Philadelphia.
Electro engineering, electronic, machine-tool industries can be found almost in all large cities of the USA.
Many branches of light industry are also developed. Among them are the textile, food and woodworking industries.
