Electoral System of the UK

The House of Commons is made up of 650 elected members, known as Members of Parliament (MPs). The members of the House of Commons are elected for a period of 5 years.

The Speaker is the chairman of all debates in the House of Commons. He is elected by all the members of the House of Commons. He belongs to one of the political parties in Parliament, but he never votes with other members.

MPs are elected either at a general election, or at a by-election following the death or retirement of an MP.

Parliamentary elections must be held every five years, but the Prime Minister can decide on the exact date within those five years. The minimum voting age is 18, and the voting is taking by secret ballot.

The election campaign lasts about three weeks. The election is decided on a simple majority – the candidate with the most votes wins.

The party which wins the majority of seats forms the Government and its leader becomes Prime Minister. The Prime Minister chooses about 20 MPs from his or her party to become the Cabinet of Ministers. Each minister is responsible for a particular area of the government. The second largest party becomes the official opposition with its own leader and “Shadow cabinet”.

Government and personality

The first feature of the constitutional status of an individual in Great Britain is that there is no systematic statement of the rights, freedoms and duties of a person and a citizen. They are established and regulated by statutes, precedents, and customs.

The UK has specific legislation against discrimination on the basis of race and sex (the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975). They mainly relate to ensuring equality in the labor and social spheres, provide for responsibility for manifestations of discrimination. Limitations of human are mainly related to the fight against terrorism (the Emergency Measures Acts 1973, 1978 and the Terrorism Prevention Act 1984).

There are several categories of persons according to the degree of legal connection with the UK. The difference between them in terms of legal status consists in different opportunities for the implementation of political rights (primarily electoral), as well as entry into the UK. This is due to the history of Great Britain as a colonial power.

The following categories are available:

1)these are citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

2)there is the citizenship of the British dependent territories.

3)you have British Overseas Territories citizenship. 4)there are known persons under British protection. 5)citizens of the Republic of Ireland have a special

status.

6) there may be other foreign nationals and stateless persons in the UK.
