prefer the stores with catchy and memorable names, 60% choose a company with a quirky name rather than with a name indicating the business profile or the business propriety, every third respondent is more likely to recommend a business with a witty name, compared to one with a more traditional moniker, a quarter of people think they typically get better service from a shop with a great name [6]. Undoubtedly, this promotional survey highlights the significance of the ergonym for the company’s performance, which sparks the researchers’ interest in studying the phenomenon in modern business sphere linguistically.

As a result of artificial nomination the ergonym possesses a number of features, among the domineering ones being conciseness and novelty [7, p.6]. The first characteristic entails approaching ergonyms as monophrastic texts [8, p.11], novelty relates to a creative aspect of nomination.

In the research into ergonyms as speech acts I.V. Kryukova highlights the stylistic function of ergonyms when they are components of stylistic devices implied to express the emotional attitude of the author to the nominated objects, thus creating a humorous effect [7, p.7].

One of the discussed stylistic devices used to create a comic effect is pun as a form of wordplay.

Pun is defined as wordplay based on ostentatious or unwitting ambiguity caused by homonymy or phonetic similarity, which produce a comic effect [9, p.16]. As the sources for pun are texts of cultural value, pun contains allusion to those texts transformed in the process of wordplay. Allusion as a rhetorical figure refers the recipient to a well-known cultural phenomenon [10, p.257], whose denotation is a precedent text, i.e. a culturally and cognitively significant text for an individual, a super-personal text, which is of cultural value in the environment of the individual encompassing several generations, a text multiply referred to in the discourse of a linguistic personality [11, p.216]. The symbiotic unity of pun and allusion in ergonyms produces a persuasive effect on the potential consumer, attracts and holds their attention due to the intrigue explicit in the ergonym, which provokes the recipient to make an attempt to understand and estimate the goods or services and make a decision to purchase them.

The ergonym is a monophrastic text which refers to another monophrastic text as a cultural phenomenon, therefore using it as a precedent text. The precedent text is well-known among all members of a cultural and linguistic community and is part of the cognitive base of the community [12, p.107]. According to E.M. Beregovskaya the techniques of wordplay based on precedent texts are successfully implemented within monophrastic texts [8, p.165].

The algorithm of the research is conditioned by the aim to describe pun techniques in ergonyms and reveal the sources of allusion. The outcome will allow for an assessment of current language creativity based on precedent texts in English-speaking communities. The material of research contains 200 ergonyms from English-speaking countries: names of shops, cafes, restaurants, barbershops, hairdressers, laundries, funeral service companies, bridal shops etc. The choice stems from the fact that the companies with the mentioned profiles are located primarily in the central part of urban territory and offer goods and services to the potential end consumer. Moreover these companies operate in a highly competitive market, which makes the companies design ergonyms carefully and creatively and approach them as advertising texts.

Research results

While considering wordplay we discuss primarily different phonetic and graphic techniques applied to precedent texts when basic material is transformed to pursue the pragmatic

aims of the company according to its business profile. These transformations are not arbitrary, it is imperative to correlate the new phonetic and graphic image with the new meaning indicating the business profile, which involves lexical transformations. Lexical transformation is viewed as the aim of naming during which the company opts for a precedent phenomenon with phonetic and graphic transformation potential. Therefore wordplay encompasses phonetic, graphic, lexical and syntactic levels because it is a complex phenomenon on all levels – phonics, word-building, lexis, syntax [8; с.165]. The important thing for the authors is not to «overplay», which means that there should be balance between transformations and allusion. It attracts and holds the attention of the potential consumer, intrigues and makes homo ludens decode pun information.

Consider the following cases:

1)replacement of a phoneme / grapheme with another one similar in articulation / shape: The Codfather (fish-and-chips shop, cod); The Chopfather (barbershop, chop) after The Godfather (a film and a novel); Loft in Space (loft design company) after Lost in Space (film);

2)addition of a phoneme, which does not involve a significant change of phonetic form, but accompanied by minor graphic changes in the semantic centre of the ergonym: Florist Gump (florist’s) after Forrest Gump (a film and a character), The Planet of the Grapes (liquor store) and The Planet of the Vapes (vaporizer store) after The Planet of the Apes (film); British Hairways (barbershop) from British Airways (airline company);

3)deletion of a phoneme along with the spelling changes, which results in the semantic change: Lord of the Rinse (laundry) after Lord of the Rings (film);

4)transformation of spelling, which result in the semantic change, without phonetic changes, which helps the recipient decode visual information: Sellfridges (fridge store: sell fridges) after Selfridges (British chain store);

5)homophony on lexical and syntactical levels, which provides the recipient with dual information: Eye Care for You (optician). Graphically the key word is eye, syntactically the ergonym is a nominative phrase. Phonetically the ergonym can be perceived as a sentence with the subject I. The Scottish computer company graphically emphasizes the key word PC (personal computer) in its ergonym Bits&PCs, phonetically the ergonym is similar to the phrase bits and

pieces – an assortment of small or unspecifieditems which is related to different various computer spare parts;

6)homophony on lexical level, along with the graphic transformation of the key word: Grate Expectations (company selling fireplaces and fires) after Great Expectations (Charles Dickens’s novel), Bonnie Tiler (tiling company) after Bonnie Tyler (singer);

7)capitalization of the key words and elements of the ergonym, which aims to emphasize it and change the syntax of the ergonomic text: InFancy (children’s goods store) lets the recipient perceive the word as the phrase in fancy (chic, glamorous); the ergonym OptiMystic Eye Group (optician) emphasizes the mystery of recovering eyesight.

We note that the analyzed material does not contain ergonyms characterized by phonetic changes without graphic transformations because the ergonym fore and foremost is a visual text, which appeals to the potential consumer visually, not audibly. Consequently, the recipient interprets and decodes this text visually. Therefore in the examples provided phonetic and graphic changes are predominant and condition lexical transformations.

Consider the ergonyms transformed only on lexical levels where words are reevaluated and re-interpreted:

8)replacement of a word with another one similar in structure, which is the key word for the company performance: Mission Inflatable (inflatable goods store) – Mission Impossible (film);

9)highlighting of another meaning of the precedent word, which is based on polysemy and homonymy: Iron Maiden (professional ironing shop) after Iron Maiden (music group), Fishy Business (fishmonger) after Fishy Business (suspicious business), Electricity Bill (electricity company) after electricity bill, Temple of Groom – a barbershop and an animal after the name of the cave in Indiana Jones novels; the ergonym You should be shot (photographer) plays with two meanings of the word shoot – «take pictures» and «kill »;

10)contamination: Rimsky-Korsakoffee (coffee shop), where the second part of the composer’s name koff is the beginning of the key word of the company, which is easily decoded despite the replacement of the letter C; Stemtation (florist – stem+temptation), Phobulous (Vietnamese cafe) after Pho (owner’s name)+fabulous, Croc-a-tile (tiling shop) after crocodile+tile, Suck-cess (night man’s service) after suck+success, Fishcotheque (fishmonger) – Fish+discotheque, Lettuce Souprise you (vegetarian restaurant) after soup+surprise;

11)recovery of the original or direct meaning of a component of an idiom or set-phrase: Posh Spice (Indian restaurant with posh spices) is an allusion to Victoria Beckham nicknamed Posh Spice for her exclusive style in the music group Spice Girls.

The examples on the lexical level presented above show that the use of a precedent text as a source for pun is conditioned by cultural reasons. Linguistically the precedent text is a collocation, word combination, a compound or a derivative, which to a certain extent allows for manipulation with an element of a lexical unit, while the other elements are preserved, so that the recipient is able to recognize the precedent text and interpret the new information.

Syntactic transformations precedent texts go through are as follows:

12)transformation of the original disyllabic or polysyllabic word into a word combination or collocation and vice versa, which is accompanied with minor graphic and phonetic changes:

Tequila Mockingbird (alcohol bar) after To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee’s novel), He Brews

(coffee shop) after Hebrews (ethnonym);

13)deconstruction or a morphemic and therefore graphic, lexical and syntactical shift without phonetic change: Lettuce eat, Lettuce tempt you, Lettuce entertain you (resaturants) after the collocation Let us, which sounds as an invitation; Olive or Twist (restaurant) after Oliver Twist (Charles Dickens’s novel).

14)reinterpretation of the precedent name or its elements as a different part of speech, which entails syntactic transformation of the ergonym: the shop Havant Forgotten in the British city Havant sells greeting cards which people buy and send to relatives, friends and beloved as evidence that the addressee is not forgotten – haven’t forgotten.

The examples provided suggest that the predominant technique on the syntactic level is resegmentation, i.e. an alternative segmentation of the speech flow, which involves the shift of the word juncture and thus the syntactic transformation. The material presents only few examples of the technique which can be defined as re-morphologisation because the word changes its part- of-speech identity and acquires different morphological features.

As stated above, the ergonym undergoes minor transformations so as the recipient is able to disclose the precedent name, decode the ergonym, enjoy the wordplay and focus on the ergonym. It seems essential that the precedent name should be culturally and linguistically well-

known for the average potential consumer to be able to decode the allusion and «to read» the ergonym appropriately. Consider the main sources of allusion in order to classify precedent texts as material for creating ergonyms and as elements of the English linguistic and cultural code.

20% out of 200 considered ergonyms are allusions to commonly used English collocations, idioms or clichés:

-idioms, which undergo phonetic transformation: For heavens cake (confectionary) – For heaven’s sake; semantic transformation Stitch in Time (repair shop) – A stitch in time saves nine; idioms with a potential to replace elements for other ones similar phonetically and functionally The Couch Tomato (cafe) after couch potato (lazy, idle person), thus making idioms less pejorative;

-clichés with minor transformation and graphic highlighting of the key word: Award Wieners (fast food restaurant) – award winners (allusion to Oscar winners); The human bean (coffee shop) – the human being, Sew what! (tailoring shop) – So what!

-phrasal words which retain their phonetic form but undergo graphic transformation: the ergonym Thai Me Up (Thai restaurant) plays on the ethnic identity of the owner and the feelings one experiences while consuming Thai food – Tie me up. The ergonym Roll Inn (sandwich cafe) indicates the way of preparing food (roll) and the type of the restaurant (inn).

-terms and collocations from professional spheres: Quilty as Charged (company selling and producing blankets) from guilty as charged (having committed the crime one is accused of committing), Lawn and order (building maintenance) – law and order.

-borrowings or insertions which are transformed into the key word of the company’s business profile: Abra Kebabra (café of oriental cuisine – kebab) – Abracadabra, Bon A-Pet-treat

(animal bakery – pet, treat).

A great number of ergonyms are based on cinema and television allusions well-known in English-speaking or world culture (18%):

-serials and soap operas: Spex in the City (optician), Pets in the City (pet shop) – Sex in the City; The Planet of the Grapes (liquor store) and The Planet of the Vapes (vaporing shop) – The Planet of the Apes; FeastEnders (fast food shop) – EastEnders; Balti Towers (Indian restaurant) – Fawlty Towers; Hannah And Her Scissors (hairdresser) – Hanna and her sisters; Indiana Bones (car wash) and Indiana Jeans (jeans store) from Indiana Jones; Alan Cartridge (computer cartridge store) is a parody of Alan Gordon Partridge, a comic character in the British culture; Barnie's Rubble (do-it-yourself shop) after the cartoon character Barney Rubble; Heaven Scent (cosmetic shop) – Heaven Sent;

-Oscar-winning films: The Codfather (fish-and-chips shop) and The Chopfather (barbershop) – The Godfather; Florist Gump (florist) – Forrest Gump, Pulp friction (fresh juice shop)

Pulp Friction, Pulp friction (fresh juice bar) – Pulp Fiction; Farther Treads (tyre repair shop)

Phantom Thread; Back to the Fuchsia (florist) – Back to the Future; Beauty and the Beach (spa salon) – Beauty and the Beast; A Fish Called Rhondda (fish-and-chips shop) – A Fish called Wanda;

-cinema and television figures: Jean Claude van Nam (company providing vans for relocation) after Jean Claude van Damme; Bread Pitt (sandwich cafe) after the actor Brad Pitt; Floral and Hardy (florist) after Laurel и Hardy.

It should be noted, that beside the above mentioned films cinema and television allusion sources are mostly comedies (beauty salon Facial Attraction after the film with the same name)

and fantasy films, which indicates the domineering interest of an average recipient who, according to the authors of the ergonym, is able to decode the information in the ergonym and appreciate its creative potential.

Another source of allusion is literature (15%):

-Shakespeare’ works: Merchant of Tennis (tennis equipment shop) – Merchants of Venice; Much Ado about Muffins (cake shop) – Much Ado about Nothing; Macbet (betting and gaming company) – Macbeth;

-Charles Dickens’s works: Grate Expectations (company selling fireplaces and fires),

Cake Expectations (confectionary) – Great Expectations; Olive or Twist (restaurant) – Oliver Twist;

-detective literature: The Hound of the Basket Meals (fast food shop) – The Hound of the Baskerville (Arthur Doyle’s novel); Agatha Crustie (bakery) after the writer Agatha Christie; Surelock Homes (locksmith repair shop) after Sherlock Holmes;

-children’s literature: Toad Haul (furniture shipment company) – Toad of Toad Hill

(А.А.Milne’s play); Wizard of Odds (antique shop) – Wizzard of Oz (L. Frank Baum’s novel);

Hairy Pop-ins (dog walking and pet sitting service) is phonetically and functionally similar to Mary Poppins; Pita Pan Store (pita bakery) – Peter Pan (J.M. Barrie’s fictional character);

Pitawrapbit (healthy food restaurant) after Beatrix Potter’s character Peter Rabbit;

-epic novels: Lord of the Rinse (laundry) – Lord of the Rings;

-key works of English language culture: Frank&Stein (bar) – Frankenstein (Mary Shelley’s novel); Lord of the Fries (fast food restaurant) – Lord of the Flies (William Holding’s novel); Tequila Mockingbird (alcohol bar) – To Kill a Mockingbird (harper Lee’s novel); Cash 22 (pawnshop) – Catch 22 (J. Heller’s novel);

-folklore: Barber Blacksheep (barbershop) after the children’s rhyme Baa-baa black

sheep.

14% ergonyms contain allusion to ethnonyms and place names, mostly local ones to highlight the affiliation of the company and uniqueness of the goods and services:

-the place name of the affiliation of the company: Turn ‘em Clean (laundry) near the London tube station Turnham Green; Frockabers is a vintage shop in the famous Scottish village Fochabers, Havant Forgotten (greeting card shop) in the British town Havant; Glasgrow (gardening shop) in Glasgow, Manchipster Plaice (fish-and-chips shop) in Manchester, Pet-a-coat junction (pet grooming shop) – Petticoat Junction (London tube station), Sign Diego (sign manufacturing shop) – San Diego;

-famous places: Sconehenge (bakery) – Stonehenge, Mount Ever-Rest (cemetery) – Mount Everest; Rhode Eyeland (optician) – Rhode Island; Maida veil (bridal boutique) after the name of the expensive London district Maida Vale;

-ethnonyms: He Brews (coffee shop) – Hebrews;

-fictional place name: Temple of Vroom (driving school, vroom is the sound of the starting car) from Temple of Groom, a place name in Indiana Jones novels;

-following the pattern of real place names with toponymical formants: Pawchester Cat Hotel is a pet care house – paw+chester.

10% ergonyms contain allusion to art:

-music groups: Iron Maiden (professional ironing) after the group with the same name; Spex Pistols (optician) after Sex Pistols; Bread Zeppelin (sandwich and salad cafe) after Led Zeppelin; Chipsy King (restaurant) after the group Gypsy Kings.

-songs and albums: Dark Side of the Spoon (coffee shop) – Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd’s album), Brim Full of Rasher (snacks and drinks) after Cornershop’s single Brimful of Asha.

-musicians and artists: Rimsky-Korsakoffee (coffee shop); Amy’s Winehouse (liquor store)

Amy Winehouse; Jason Donervan (kebab shop) – Jason Donovan; Bonnie Tiler (tiling shop) – Bonnie Tyler; Spruce Springclean (window and carpet cleaning) after Bruce Springsteen; Freddy MehrCurry (sausage restaurant) – Freddy Mercury; Vincent Van Doughnut (restaurant); Posh Spice (Indian restaurant ) after Victoria Beckham’s nickname from the group Spice Girls.

Allusions referring to basic knowledge in history, religion, computer technology and economics are significantly rarer because they neither belong to popular culture nor are the key symbols of English language culture, which would interfere with decoding the ergonim information:

-military and historical: William the Concreter (concrete supplier) – William the Conqueror (Anglo-Norman king); Jack the Stripper (door and furniture dismantling), Jack the Stripper (sheep shearing), Jack the Clipper (barber shop) after Jack the Ripper (murderer); Marquis de salade (cafe) – Marquis de Sade (politician, philosopher, aristocrat); Thai Tanic (Thai restaurant) – Titanic; Abe’s on Lincoln (bar) – Abe Lincoln (US president); The Batter of Bosworth

(fast food shop) after Battle of Bosworth (a battle of the Hundred Years War); Hair Raid Shelter

(hairdresser) after air raid shelter; A salt battery (fish-and-chip shop) – assault battery;

-religious: The cod almighty (fishmonger) – God Almighty; Tree Wise Men (forestry specialist) – Three Wise Men (Biblical magi); Cane and Able (gift shop) – Cain and Abel (biblical brothers); Oh My Cod (fishmonger) – Oh, my God (interjection); The Garden of Eat'n

-computerand internet-allusions: World Of Woolcraft (wool shop) after World of Warcraft; Hair Dot Comb (hairdresser) is the reminder of Internet realia;

-realia of everyday life: Fishcotheque (fish-and-chips shop) from dicotheque; Plaice Station (fish-and-chips shop) from Police Station; The «proper tea» (tea shop) from property; Dan Druffs (barber shop) from dandruff; Tie coon (tie shop) from tycoon.

According to the statistics, the domineering sources of allusion which undergo language transformations are linguistic units proper used in everyday communication. The particular condition for their application as a source of allusion is their expressiveness typical of conversational style which is to be transferred on the ergonym and to ensure its recognition. They are idioms, set-phrases, phrasal verbs, professional slang. Popular culture, mainly serials, world famous works of literature and cinema, detectives, cinema and music stars, provide material for other allusion sources, which proves that ergonyms are aimed at average consumers as the largest target group. The above mentioned sources of allusion constitute the cultural background of the typical

British consumer. Decoding the ergonim and relating it to the precedent text or name attracts and entertains the potential consumer, creates a humorous effect and causes a positive attitude to the business nominated with the ergonym. That exemplifies the educational (decoding the pun) and persuasive (attracting attention) functions of the wordplay. The consumer is believed to get intellectual enjoyment and to assess the information.

To conclude, we outline the correlation between ergonyms, wordplay and allusion. As a monophrastic text the ergonim is an encoded message to potential consumers, which influences them and evokes certain feelings and frames of mind through language manipulation on phonetic, lexical and syntactical levels by using different wordplay techniques. While decoding the message the recipient relies on their linguistic and cultural experience, which the authors of the ergonim appeal to. In this connection, allusion is a bridge which links the known and the new helping the recipient to solve the problem, i.e. decode the ergonim and enjoy the outcome, the language manipulation techniques and the author’s creativity. These arguments explain the current use of wordplay and allusion in creating ergonyms nowadays.

ABOUT ANNIVERSARY INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

«LEMPERT READINGS – XX»

11-12 April, 2018, on the basis of Pyatigorsk State University, a significant pedagogical event was held: «Lempert Readings – XX» the Annual International Scientific and Methodological Symposium "Didactics of Languages and Cultures: Problems, Researches, Solutions", dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Nikolai Vasilyevich Baryshnikov. Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, a member of the Academy of Pedagogical and Social Sciences, the Head of the Department of Intercultural Communication, Linguodidactics, Pedagogical Technologies of Training and Education N.V. Baryshnikov [http://pglu.ru] for 20 years has been organizing and holding «Lempert Readings» in the memory of his teacher

- Boris Davidovich Lempert, the founder of the Pyatigorsk Methodogical School, the initiator of the first department of foreign language teaching in the Soviet Union.

The symposium was attended by specialists in the field of teaching foreign languages, linguistics [http://docme.ru], intercultural communication, teachers of foreign languages [http://elibrary.ru] from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Tomsk, Tambov, Volgograd, Novorossiysk, Cherkessk, Grozny, Elista, Penza, Taganrog, Astrakhan, Krasnodar, Pyatigorsk, Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Tuapse and other cities of Russia [http://elibrary.ru], as well as foreign participants [http://pglu.ru]. At the plenary and section meetings big interest was aroused the reports made by leading Russian and foreign experts in the field of methodology and didactics of teaching foreign languages: Professor of Moscow State University V.V. Safonova, Professor of Moscow State Regional University N.D. Galskova, Professor of Moscow City Pedagogical University E.G. Tareva, Professor of Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University L.A. Milovanov, Professor of the National Research Tomsk University S.K. Gural, Professor Ivona Anna Ndai (Poland) and others.

Voronezh State Technical University at the symposium was represented by Professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences E.P. Komarova and associate professor, candidate of philological sciences L.V. Lukina.

At the official opening ceremony the participants of the conference were greeted by the Rector of Pyatigorsk State University, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Symposium A.P. Gorbunov. In his speech he stressed that at present the humanities play a leading role in the process of improving the phenomena occurring in the modern society, since they contribute to the intercultural interaction of representatives of various languages and cultures. Today, the issues related to the problems of teaching languages and cultures are very relevant and urgent.

The participants of the symposium discussed a wide range of problems devoted to the international linguistic education, all-European language pedagogy, etc. Great interest were aroused the reports made by Professor Bary Ndyai (Poland) about the Koranic schools in the system of religious education in Senegal, and Professor V.V. Safonova (Moscow) "Pan-European language pedagogy as a global socio-pedagogical phenomenon in the educational space of the modern world." Doctor of Humanities, Professor Ivona Anna Ndyai from the Warmia and Mazury University, Olsztyn city (Poland), showed an interesting experience of teaching Russian as a foreign language to Polish students [http://pglu.ru].

The constant participant of «Lempert Readings», the chief editor of the journal “Foreign

Languages at School” [http://pglu.ru], an honorary professor of Pyatigorsk State University N.P. Kamenetskaya at the meeting with teachers of foreign languages told about the plans of the magazine, which she has been heading for more than 30 years, and answered numerous questions.

A characteristic feature of all «Lempert Readings» is a combination of the experience of leading scientists and young scientific forces. On the second day of the symposium a high level of reports was demonstrated by young participants: graduate students, young teachers [http://pglu.ru]. In the course of professional communication school teachers and university lecturers, graduate students and professors discussed the most urgent problems of the linguistic and cultural space. Various solutions were offered to the difficulties associated with speaking and writing in foreign languages, not only in higher education institutions, but also in schools. It also should be noted that the reports and speeches of the participants of the symposium touched on a wide range of specialities: the diplomatic service, medicine, law, programming, pedagogy, etc.

Based on the materials of the international scientific and methodological symposium

«Lempert Readings – XX» a collective monograph was published, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Doctor of pedagogical sciences, Professor N.V. Baryshnikov, which deals with topical problems of the didactics of languages and cultures, new linguodidactic statements are theoretically substantiated, and offers effective, innovative technologies for teaching foreign languages and cultures in various conditions. All participants of the symposium received certificates of participation at the international scientific and methodological symposium «Lempert Readings

– XX».

The organizers of the International Symposium prepared an interesting cultural program that helped the participants to get acquainted with the resort city in the Stavropol Region of the Russian Federation and Pyatigorsk State University [http://docme.ru]. The fine completion of the symposium was a wonderful concert prepared by the university singers and dance groups. The decoration of the concert was the performance of the jubilee, which was greeted with a storm of applause.

At the closing ceremony many kind words were addressed to the jubilee and the Organizing Committee. These were two days of fruitful work, the exchange of ideas and plans [http://docme.ru].

The annual International Scientific and Methodological Symposium «Lempert Readings» is an interesting, stimulating event for professionals in the field of teaching foreign languages. For twenty years, the best experts in the field of pedagogical science have gathered in Pyatigorsk State University to share ideas, exchange innovative solutions in linguodidactics, intercultural communication, and pedagogy.
