Transmission Technology
The aim of this article is to show the reader how voice can be changed from analog signal to its digital representation and transmitted over PSTN.
The research method is description.
The author denotes that voice in nature is an analog signal and changes continuously in frequency and amplitude.
Describing how analog signal can be presented as a digital signal the author gives an overview of the most popular TDM system – T1.
Digitized voice can be then transmitted not only over circuit-switched networks, but also over packet-switched networks. That brings up the challenge of getting fast enough transmission speed to suffice the needs of time-sensitive conversations and getting packets in the right order.
The article describes the period of the early 1960th when integration between digital systems and PSTN began.
The author’s conclusion is that packet switching technology would play an important role in the future of telephone networks but further development and progress will be necessary.
