The action of the book "Divergent" takes place in a world that has survived the global war, in futuristic Chicago, where society is divided into five fractions: "Erudite", "Friendliness", "Sincerity", "Renunciation" and "Fearlessness". Each of them combines representatives of a certain type. Every teenager who has reached the age of 16 must pass a test to determine which fraction he belongs to, and at the initiation either trust in the test, or remain in his fraction or, at the call of his soul, choose another fraction.

The main character Beatrice Prior, passing the test, found that all fractions were right for her. People who are suitable for several fractions are called divergents. Society was very afraid of divergents, since they do not know how to obey and think outside the box. Without telling anyone, Beatrice chooses Fearlessness at the dedication because she has always admired this faction. As a result, she acquires a new home, new friends - Kristina, Will and Al - and a new enemy of Peter, falls in love with her instructor Four and changes her name to Tris.

The first preparation given by Tris is pretty hard. She lost the battle twice, was expelled from the faction, but still she managed to stay and gain respect. The second preparation included overcoming one's hidden fears. Tris coped much faster than the rest, and Four was very alarmed. After the test, she decided to contact Tori, who conducted a test with her, and she told her the story of her brother, who also quickly coped with the test, but was killed after the final test. In desperation, Tris goes to "Erudite" to his brother Caleb. He believes that society should be governed by scholars, not renounced.

When Tris returns home, three people attack her, take her to the Pit and try to dump her. Tris exposes one of them - Ala, but Four appears and saves her. The next day, Al tries to apologize to Tris, but she warns him that she will kill if he comes up to her again, after which Al commits suicide by jumping into the Pit.

Tris blames herself for Al's suicide, but Four reassures her and offers her practice on his fears, so that Tris is not exposed in the future, she must overcome her fears not as a divergent, but as fearless.

In the morning, Tris goes to the final test, but before this, Four shows her arrived scholars who bring equipment and an ampoule with a liquid called "Modeling Serum", which allows you to control a person through a computer. After the final test, all new members of “Fearlessness” were given an injection, explaining that the “tracking sensor” was implanted. The next morning, Tris discovers that all fearless behave strangely. It turns out that it was not a tracking sensor, but a modeling serum that did not work on Tris.

Heading on the train with the rest of the fearless to the "Obnegation" faction, Tris finds Four, as it turned out, the "serum" did not work on him either. Upon arrival, all fearless began to kill the inhabitants of the “Renunciation”. Tris and Four pretend to be ruled by them, but they are declassified and taken to Janine, who is behind everything that happens in Renunciation. She believes that the society should be governed by "Erudite", and the "Obnegation" should be eliminated. Only fearless people can wield weapons, but they will never agree to kill the renounced, therefore, in Erudite they created a modeling serum so that they could be controlled through the main computer. The handicap is taken away, and Tris is ordered to be executed, but her mother saves her. Together, they try to get to the shelter, but Tris's mother is injured, and she dies.

Having reached the shelter, Tris, her father, Caleb and Marcus - the leader of the “Renunciation” - decide to stop the fearless. They go to Fearless, capture Peter, who leads them to the main computer, from where they control fearless, but on the way father Tris dies.

Having made his way to the main computer, Tris finds Four, but he is under the serum. Janine orders Four to kill Tris, but she brings him to his senses, and they force Janine to erase the modeling program, after which all the fearless come to their senses again. Security camera recorded security; Four, Tris, Caleb, Peter and Marcus take the train and ride to the end station.
