Assessment of the pulse on peripheral arteries

Auscultation of the arteries

Points for auscultation of peripheral arteries:

1.Carotid

2.Subclavial

3.Brachial

4.Radial

5.Renal

6.Iliac

7.Femoral

8.Popliteal

Blood pressure measurement

Arterial Pressure- the pressure of blood that cause distention of the arterial walls

Systolic Pressure- maximal pressure caused by ejection blood during systole of left ventricle

Diastolic Pressure- minimal pressure during systole of left ventricle

Pulse Pressure- the difference between systolic and diastolic pressure

Methods of BP measurement

1.Direct (invasive)

2.Non-invasive:

Auscultatory – Korotkoff`s method

Oscyllometric

АД

The auscultatory method is commonly used in medical practice. The method was proposed by N. Korotkoff in 1905 and is used to measure systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

A more accurate instrument is a Riva-Rocci mercury manometer. This is a mercury container communicated with a thin vertical glass tube attached to a scale graduated in millimetres from 0 to 300.

BP measurement

1.Cuff pressure 2.Korotkoff tones

I.phase – first quiet tones– Systolic BP II.phase – short compression murmurs

III.phase – loud systolic murmurs IV phase – decreasing intensity of

tones

V фаза – disappearance of tones– Diastolic BP

Rules of BP measurement

1.Rest before the measurement (5 min. and more)

2.No coffee intake or smoking before the measurement

3.Selecting the right cuff

4.Supporting of elbow on the table

5.Legs shouldn’t be crossed

6.Bulb and cuff at heart level

7.Keep silence
