XVII. Revision translation.

Part II

Reading I

1. Read the text and formulate its main idea.

Study the vocabulary list and the notes after the text.

All people are different. Some are rich, some are poor. Some are smart and active, some are silly and inert. There are those who care about other people, and those who are totally inconsiderate.

Sympathy, kindness and generosity of some are opposed to jealousy, cruelty and greediness of others. We are not born angels, but we are born naturally good and friendly.

As we live, we learn to be cunning, insincere and rude. But we also learn to be gentle, responsible and polite. Much depends on our attitude to ourselves though. Lack of will-power is rooted in self-pity. On the contrary, people with a high level of self-respect are more likely to be determined and strong-willed. Excessive arrogance though brings no success. Unsuccessful people cannot be happy.

Success favours the most hard-working and the most reliable individuals. Those who are prone to laziness and passivity cannot be trusted.

People are different. There are leaders and those who are easily-led; those who do and those who do nothing; daydreamers and those whose dreams come true.

This is not in our power to change all people around us for the better. But each of us can try to be a little more tolerant, a little less aggressive and more or less optimistic!
