WARM-UP

  1. Game “Cross the River"

Draw a river on the board, with two sets of four stepping stones across the river. If you like drawing, you may want to add “dangers” like crocodiles, shark fins, or snakes in the river. Write Team A and Team В underneath the two sets of stepping stones. Divide the class into two teams. Tell children you are going to show each team different flashcards. Each team has to guess their words correctly to move across the river. Show one team a flashcard and choose a child in that team to give the answer. Allow him / her to consult friends first to avoid embarrassment if the answer is incorrect. If the child answers correctly, write the word on that team’s first stepping stone. If the answer is not correct, ask the other team to tell you the word, and write the word on that team’s first stepping stone. The first team to complete the four stepping stones with words crosses the river and wins.

PRESENTATION

  1. a) Look and say how children have prepared for the Ribbon Festival. Use the Present Perfect tense (p. 99, ex. 1).

Read the sentences from the box under the picture.

Pupils look at the picture and say what children are doing at the moment of speech using the information from the box.

Write the sentences in pupils’ exercise books and on the board.

Key: 1. The children are decorating school walls with wall newspapers.

  1. They are inviting parents and guests to their festival. 3. They are making postcards in the shape of a ribbon for visitors.

Then pupils write the sentences in the Past Simple tense.

Key: 1. The children decorated school walls with wall newspapers. 2. They invited parents and guests to their festival. 3. They made postcards in the shape of a ribbon for visitors.

If you like, ask pupils to say how children have prepared for the Ribbon Festival.

b) Listen and read

Pre-reading: Read the title of the text. Ask, “What is this text about? Have you got a similar festival at your school?”

Read the text. Ask pupils to read the sentences in silence after you. You can translate difficult sentences or proper names into the native language.

Pronounce the words clearly.

While-reading: Do choral and individual repetition of difficult words. Follow the same procedure three or four times.

Then pupils read the text themselves in a chain. Do choral and individual repetition if it is necessary again.

Ask the questions, “Are Ann and Dan going to the festival? What are they going to wear? Why?”

Post-reading: “What school festivals do you have at your school?”

PRACTICE

  1. Work in pairs. Take turns to ask and answer the questions (p. 100, ex. 2).

Pair work: Ask pupils to read the questions to each other and answer them.

Pupils may also be asked to write answers in their exercise books and on the board.

Monitor the activity and help where necessary.

Pupils act out the dialogue in pairs.

Key: 1. I know the Ribbon Festival. 2. They are going to have the Ribbon Festival. 3. They have decorated with wall newspapers. 4. The children are going to wear colourful bright ribbons. 5. They are going to perform a new play, sing songs and recite funny poems.

READING AND WRITING

  1. Look at say what the children have done at the ribbon Festival (p. 100, ex. 3).

Drill the words using the pictures.

Read out the caption for each of the pictures in turn. Pupils listen and look at the pictures. Use board sketches, miming and gestures to check if pupils have understood the meaning of the new words.

Pupils take turns to read out the words. Help with pronunciation.

Go round helping. Repeat with several different pupils.

Read the example and make similar sentences using the word combinations.

  1. Work in groups. Choose the party you are going to celebrate. Discuss the questions (p. 101, ex. 4).

Pupils read the questions and try to answer them in pairs.

  1. Make a poster. Work in groups. Write about the school holiday you have discussed. Draw some pictures about it. Use the Present Perfect and Ex.4 as a plan (p. 101, ex. 5).

Pupils read the text one by one. If it is necessary, help to translate the text into the native language.

Give pupils pieces of paper to make a poster about the school holiday pupils have read and discussed.

ENDING THE LESSON

  1. Game "Odd One Out"

Write four words on the board, three of which belong to a lexical set (e.g., hobby activities, food, time) and one that does not. Pupils have to say which one does not fit the set (e.g., “egg”, “apple”, “bear”, “banana” - the odd one out is “bear”, as it is not a kind of food). This can also be played with drawings or pictures on the board.

Home work
