WARM-UP

  1. Game "Musical Statues"

Play any music and children dance. Every so often pause the music and say an action e.g. “Run!” Pupils pretend to run and freeze. Repeat the procedure several times naming different actions.

PRESENTATION

  1. a) Listen and repeat (p. 48, ex. 1).

Ask pupils to look at the pictures.

Say the words.

Drill each new word two or three times.

Write these words down into pupils’ vocabularies.

Do choral and individual repetition of every word.

Stick the pictures of these words on the board.

Ask pupils to write the words near the pictures.

Monitor the activity and help where necessary. If you like, ask pupils to make sentences with these words.

Present the adverbs “yesterday” in contrast to “today”, which pupils already know: “Today is Monday. Yesterday was Sunday.”

Listen and repeat: Explain that “present” means every day, and “past” means yesterday, or a time that has finished.

Remember to pupils that there are regular and irregular verbs. Read the verbs.

Ask some pupils to read the verbs in present and past.

b) Listen, read and act out.

Books are closed. Read the dialogue. Pupils listen.

Ask pupils to open the books.

Pair work: Read the dialogue again. Pupils listen and read in pairs.

Ask pupils to read and practise their part in the story for a few minutes. Go round helping.

One or two pairs read or act out the dialogue.

Repeat with a different pupil, but this time let pupils choose partners to act them out with.

EXTRA

Explain the rule “Let us ...”, give the short form of this construction “Let’s ...”

Stick the “Activities” words on the board. Ask pupils to name the activities.

Then complete the construction “Let us...” with some “Activities” words, e.g. “Let’s watch TV! Let’s sing a song! Let’s read an interesting book!” etc.

PRACTICE

  1. Tell your classmates what game you played yesterday (p. 49, ex. 2).

Tell pupils to imagine they did an action yesterday e.g. danced or watched TV. Pupils look at the pictures and say what they yesterday.

Repeat the procedure and, if appropriate, invite individual pupils to take turns to come and stand by you and mime to the rest of the class and say what they yesterday.

EXTRA

Game "Miming Game"

Mime an action you did yesterday e.g. danced or watched TV.

Pupils guess what you did and call out the action in past.

Repeat the procedure and, if appropriate, invite individual pupils to take turns to come and stand by you and mime to the rest of the class.

READING AND WRITING

  1. Read and match (p. 49, ex. 3).

Ask pupils to look at the short texts about children and their hobbies and activities.

Ask pupils to read them in silence.

Then ask pupils to look at the pictures of the exercise.

Ask pupils to match the texts with correct pictures.

  1. Work in pairs. Take turns to ask and answer the questions (p. 50, ex. 4).

Pair work: Ask pupils to read the questions and give the answers.

Pupils may also be asked to write answers in their exercise books and on the board.

Monitor the activity and help where necessary. Pupils act out the dialogue in pairs using the questions and giving the answers about the children’s hobbies and activities.

One or two pairs act out the dialogue, and so on.

  1. Write six sentences about your friends. What are their hobbies? What did they do yesterday? (p. 50, ex. 5).

After doing the previous exercise ask pupils to make a short story about their friends and their hobbies. Explain to pupils that they are going to answer the questions of Ex.4 and their answers will be a short story about their friends. Pay their attention to the pattern sentences.

Pupils have to complete them with suitable words and word combinations.
