WARM-UP
Game "Odd One Out"
Write four words on the board, three of which belong to a lexical set (e.g., hobby activities, food, time) and one that does not. Pupils have to say which one does not fit the set (e.g., “egg”, “apple”, “bear”, “banana” - the odd one out is “bear”, as it is not a kind of food). This can also be played with drawings or pictures on the board.
PRESENTATION
Read what Dan does every day and write what he did yesterday (p. 55, ex. 1).
Ask pupils to look at the example and read two sentences. Then ask any pupil to copy these sentences on the board.
Compare these sentences. Ask pupils that tenses are they written.
Pupils have to answer: Present Simple and Past Simple.
Then pupils read the table “Past Simple”.
Compare regular verbs and irregular verbs in positive, negative sentences. Then pay pupils’ attention to questions.
Read the sentences. Then ask some pupils to write them down on the board.
Then ask pupils to say these sentences in the past tense and write them next to the sentences in the present tense in pairs.
Pair work: Ask pupils to fill in sentences using the verbs in the past tense.
Pupils read the sentences and complete them with the verbs written on the board.
Check up the sentences.
Key: 1. Dan walked to school yesterday. 2. He trained in the gym yesterday. 3. Dan helped his parents yesterday. 4. He phoned his grandparents yesterday. 5. Dan listened to music yesterday. 6. He played football yesterday.
PRACTICE
Read and complete the story. Use the Past Simple tense (p. 55, ex. 2).
Read the verbs in a box. Pupils repeat them too.
Ask pupils to complete the sentences using the words from the brackets in the past simple tense.
Pair work: Pupils in pairs read the sentences and fill in the gaps with the verbs in the past simple tense.
Then ask pupils to go to the board and complete the sentences.
Monitor the activity and help where necessary.
Key: 1. drank, ate; 2. phoned; 3. went; 4. met; 5. played; 6. went. READING AND WRITING
a) Work in pairs. Take turns to ask and answer the questions about what you did yesterday (p. 56, ex. 3).
Books are closed. Read the dialogue. Pupils listen.
Ask pupils to open the books.
Pair work: Read the dialogue again. Pupils listen and read in pairs.
Ask pupils to read and practise their part in the story for a few minutes. Go round helping.
One or two pairs read or act out the dialogue.
Repeat with a different pupil, but this time let pupils choose partners to act them out with.
Repeat with several different pupils.
b) Change the highlighted words and act out your dialogues.
Read aloud the instruction and check that pupils understand what to do.
If the task is rather difficult to understand, write this dialogue on the board with the gaps.
Pair work: Ask pupils to fill in the gaps using suitable words.
(It will be a good work to fill in the gaps with the whole class before pair work).
If it is difficult for pupils to fill in the gaps, stick some flashcards in the gaps. Pupils make their own dialogues using flashcards or their own ideas. Monitor the activity and help where necessary. Pupils act out the dialogue in pairs using the information from the TV guide.
One or two pairs act out the dialogue, and so on.
Write one sentence for each of these verbs (p. 56, ex. 4).
Ask pupils to read the verbs in the boxes one by one. Translate them.
Ask pupils to make sentences with these verbs in the past simple tense.
Write what these children did or didn’t do yesterday (p. 56, ex. 5).
Ask pupils to say the children’s names. Then ask about their hobbies.
Then ask what they like doing and what they don’t like doing.
After that ask pupils to say what these children did / didn’t do yesterday using the table.
Ask a pupil to read about Ann. A pupil reads an example.
Ask pupils to make sentences about other children.
Ask pupils to open their exercise books and write the sentences down. Monitor the activity and help where necessary.
ENDING THE LESSON
Use pictures to play a matching game. Draw pictures on the board, or stick pictures cut from magazines or newspapers on the board. Write the words at the other end of the board. Pupils match pictures and words by drawing a line e.g. from the picture of “to swim” to the words “to swim”.
Home work
Read (p. 55, ex. 1, 2).
Further practice
Use Workbook tasks at the lesson or at home.
