SteeringHeadBearingCheckandAdjustment

Check

1.Raiseandsupportthemotorcyclesothatthefrontwheelisclearoftheground.

2. Movethehandlebarsfromlock-to-lockwhilstcheckingforsignsoftightspotsornotchiness(bearingsover-tightened).

3. Holdthelowerendofthefrontforksandtrytomovethemforwardandbackwardtocheckforsignsoffreeplayin thebearings(bearingsinsufficientlytightenedorworn).

4.Adjustasdescribedbelowthenlowerthemotorcycletotheground.

Adjustment

1. Slackenthetopyokeclampbolts.

1.Topyokeclampbolt

2. Releasethetwoscrewssecuringtheuppercoverofthehandlebarclamptothelowersection.

3. Pivottheinstrumentsforwardtorevealthesteeringstemtopnut.

1. TopnutNote:

   • Whenthehandlebarsandtopyokeareremoved(below), thesteeringlockandheadlightswillalsoberemovedaspartoftheassembly.

4.Slackenandremovethetopnutandwasher.Liftandsupportthehandlebarandtopyokeassemblytogainaccesstothebearingadjusternutandlocknut.

1. Locknut

2. Adjusternut

5. Slackenthelocknutandadjusternut.

6. Adjust thebearingfreeplayasfollows:

   1. Tightentheadjusternutto40Nm.

   2. Slackentheadjusternutfully.

   3. Re-tightentheadjuster nutto6Nm.

   4. Loosentheadjusternutby90°.Notethattherewillnowbefree-playpresent.

   5. Holdtheadjuster nutinthatpositionwhiletighteningthelocknutto40Nm.

Note:

• Ensuretheadjusternutdoesnotmoveasthelocknutistightened-

?.Seatthetopyokeassemblyinpositionthenrefitthewasherandtopnut,tighteningitto65 Nm.

1.Topnut

8. Checkthatthefreeplayhasbeeneliminatedandthatthesteeringcanbeturnedfreelyfromlocktolockwithoutanysignoftightness.Re-adjustifnecessary.

8. Tightenthetop yokeclampboltsto20Nm.

9. Pivottheinstrumentsbacktotheirnormalposition,fitthetwoboltstotheuppercoverandtightenthemto3Nm.

BottomYokeandHeadstockBearingsYokeRemoval

1. Removebothforksas describedonpage14.4.

2. Releasethetwoscrews securingtheuppercoverofthe handlebarclamptothelowerhalf.

2. Screws

3. Slackenthetopyokeclampbolts.

4. Pivottheinstrumentsforwardtorevealthetopnut.

1.Topnut

5.Slackenandremovethetopnutandwasherfromthesteering stem.Liftandsupportthehandlebarandtopyokeassemblytogainaccesstothebearingadjusternutandlocknut.

1.Locknut

2.Adjusternut

6. Removethelocknutandadjusternut.

7. Detachthebottomyokefrombelowtheframeheadstock.

Bearingremoval

1. Usingasuitabledrift,evenlyandprogressivelydrivethebearingouterracesfrom theframeheadstock.

2. Removetheinnerraceanddustsealfromthebottomyokeusingapressorpuller.

1. ^{Fitanewdustshieldtothesteeringstemonthebottom}yoke.

2. Pressanewinnerraceontothesteeringstemofthebottomyoke.

3. Evenlyandprogressivelydrivenewbearingouter

4. Lubricatetheheadstockbearingsusing multi­purposegrease.

5. Inserttheloweryoketotheframeheadstock,fittheupperbearingandretainwiththeadjusternut.

6. Adjustthebearingfreeplayasfollows:

   1. Tightentheadjusternutto40Nm.

   2. Slackentheadjusternutfully.

   3. Re-tightentheadjusternutto6Nm.

   4. Loosentheadjusternutby90°.Notethattherewillnowbefree-playpresent.

   5. Holdtheadjusternutinthatpositionwhiletighteningthelocknutto40 Nm.

6. Seatthetopyokeassemblyinpositionthenrefitthewasherandtopnut,tighteningitto65Nm.
