RearSuspensionUnits

Adjustment

Therearsuspensionisadjustableforpre-loadonly.

Tochangetherearsuspensionspringpre-loadsetting,inserttheadjustmenttoolsuppliedinthetoolkitintotheholeprovidedintheadjusterring.

Turntheadjusterringclockwisetoincreasespringpre-load,andanti-clockwisetodecreasespringpre­load.Whendeliveredfromthefactory,thepre-loadadjusterwillbesetatposition 1.

Adjustersettingsarecountedfromonewithpositiononebeingwiththeadjusterturnedfullyanti-clockwise.Therearefivepositionsintotal.Positiononegivestheminimumamountofspringpre-load.

Note:

  • Thedetailsgiveninthetablearetobeusedasaguideonlywheretheriderandpassenger eachweigh90kgorless.Settingrequirementsshouldbeincreasedforheavierridersandpassengers andaccordingtopersonalpreferences.

Removal

  1. Raiseandsupportthemotorcyclesothattherearwheelisclearofthe ground.

Note:

  • Ifbothsuspensionunitsaretoberemoved,placeablockbeneaththerearwheeltopreventit droppingwhenthesecondunitisremoved.

  • Slackenandremovetheupperandlowermounting boltsandwashersthenremovethesuspensionunitfromitsmountingspigots.

    1. Repeatoperations1and2fortheotherrearsuspensionunit(ifrequired).

    2. Discardallmountingboltsremoved.

    Inspection

    1. Removealltracesofdirtandinspectfordamage/weartothemountingsandsprings.

    2. Inspecttheunitcloselyforfluidleaksfromallpartsoftheunitandforcracksanddamagetothesprings.Ifthereisanydamage,oranyleaksareevident,bothrearsuspensionunitsmustberenewedasamatchedpair.

    3. Checkthemountingrubbersforcracksandsignsofelongation.Replaceasnecessary.

    Removal

    Note:

    • Theswingingarmmayberemovedwiththeexhaustsysteminplace.

    Installation

    1. Locatethesuspensionunits tothemountingspigots,articulatingtheswinging armuntilthedistancebetweentheupperandlowerspigotsallowstheunitstofit.

    2. Fittheoriginalwasherstonewmountingbolts.Installtheboltsthentightenthemto28Nm.

    Note:

    • Thelargewasherisfittedtothetopmounting,thesmallerwashertothelower.

  • Repeatoperations1and2fortheotherrearsuspensionunit(ifremoved).

  • Removethewheelsupport(iffitted),lowerthemotorcycletothegroundandparkitonthesidestand.

    1. Supportthemotorcyclesothattherearwheelisclearoftheground,withnoweightontheswingingarmandsuspensionunits.

    2. Removetherearwheelasdescribedonpage

    16.8.

    1. Removethebevelboxasdescribedonpage6.4.

    2. Removetherearsuspensionunitsasdescribedonpage13.4.

    3. Detachthebrakepipeclipsfromtherighthandsideoftheswingingarm.

    1. Supportthearmbeforeremovingbothswingingarmpivotscompletely.

    Note:

    • Thelefthandpivotwillbeverytight.

  • Easetheswingingarmrearwardswhiledetachingthedriveshaftgaiterfromthearm,leavingitattachedtothetransmission.

  • Manoeuvretheswingingarmfromtheframe,slidingitoverthedriveshaft(whichrunsinsideit).Takecaretonotdamageordetachtheairboxdrainhosesduringremoval.

    10.Ifnecessary,detachthedriveshaftfrom thegearboxoutputshaftbypullingitgentlytowardstherearofthemotorcycle.

    Inspection

    1. Inspecttheswingingarmbearingsandbearingoutercupsfordamage,cracksandsignsofthebearingrollersindentingtheoutercup.Renewthebearingsasdescribedonpage13.7ifanydamageispresent ineitherbearing.

    2. Inspecttheswingingarmpivots fordamageanddeformation.Renewasnecessary.

    3. Inspectthedriveshaftgaiterforsplitsandotherdamage.Replaceasnecessary.

    Installation

    Note:

    • Thedriveshaftgaiterisattachedtotheswingingarmwithsuperglue.

    • Donotattempttofittheswingingarmwiththedriveshaftsleeveinplace.Fitthesleeveafterfirstfittingtheswingingarmtotheframe.

    1. Greasethedriveshaftsplineswithmolybdenumdisulphidegrease.

    2. Locateandengagethedriveshafttothegearboxoutputshaft.

    1. Thoroughlylubricatetheswingingarmbearingswithgeneralpurposegreasebeforepositioningthemtotheswingingarm.

    5. Engagethethreadsoftheswingingarmpivotstotheframe.

    • Itisnecessarytoremovethelefthandbearingfirst.

  • Workingfromtheoppositesideofthearmtothebearingbeingremoved,driftout thebearingandplugtogether.

    Note:

    • Foraccesstothe bearingcupduringremoval,itisrecommendedthattheplugbedeliberatelydeformedandremovedfirstinordertoseetherearfaceofthebearingcup.

    1. Repeatforthesecondbearingcup.

    1. Toremovetherighthandbearing,driftouttheplugandbearingoutercup workingfromthelefthandsideoftheswingingarm.

    InstallationNote:

    • Replacementbearingsaresuppliedwiththeplugattachedtotheoutercupbymeansofadhesive.Donotseparatethesecomponents,asitisnotnecessarytodosoforinstallation.Theplugisnotaninterferencefitintheswingingarm.

    1.Thoroughlycleanalldebrisanddirtfromthetwobearinglocationsintheswingingarm.

    2.PressthenewbearingoutercupsandplugsintoeachsideoftheswingingarmusingtoolT3BB0064,untilbotharepressedfullyuptotheirlocatingshouldersinsidethearm.
