AllCaliforniamodelsarefittedwithanevaporativeemissionscontrolsystemtopreventtheexhaustingoffuelvapourintotheatmosphere.

Acanistercontainingactivatedcharcoal,locatedbeneaththelefthandsidecover,absorbshydrocarbonvapourgivenoffbythefuelinthefueltank.Vapourdeliverytothecanisteroccursatalltimes,butisparticularlyhighafterriding,whenthemotorcycleisparkedindirectsunlightorinhightempertures.Thiscausesthefueltemperatureinthefueltanktorise,resultinginariseinthevapourpressureinsidethe tank.NormallythisvapourwouldbeventedtoatmospherebutonCaliforniamodels,itisstoredinthecharcoalcanister.

When theengineisstarted,thevapourisreturnedtothethrottlebodybymeansofinductionvacuum,andisburntintheengine.

Therearetwodistinctphasestothesystem'soperation,engineoffandenginerunning.Thesetwoconditionsareexplainedoverleaf.

Whentheengineisstarted,vacuumfromtheengineisappliedthroughpipeCtothevacuumswitchonthecanister,causingthecanisterreturnvalvetoopen.Directreturnofvapour,alongpipeB,tothethrottlebodiesispreventedbythepurgecontrolvalvewhichisgovernedbytheenginemanagementsystem.Whenopen,thevalveallowsstoredvapourtoreturntothethrottlebodieswhereitenterstheengineandisburnt inthecylinders.

Thepurgecontrolvalveisshuttledbetweentheopenandclosedpositionduring purgingtopreventtransientrichmixtureandhighemissions.
