ElectricalConnectors

Beforebeginninganydiagnosis,thefollowingconnectorrelatedinformationshouldbenoted:

Note:

• Amajorcauseofhiddenelectricalfaultscanbetracedtofaultyelectricalconnectors.Forexample:

• Dirty/corrodedterminals.

• Dampterminals.

• Brokenorbentcablepinswithinmulti·plugs.

Forexample,theelectroniccontrolmodule(ECM)reliesonthesupplyofaccurateinformationtoenableittoplanthecorrectfuellingandignitiontiming.OnedirtyterminalwillcauseanexcessivevoltagedropresultinginanincorrectsignaltotheECM.

If,whencarryingoutfaultdiagnosis,afaultappearstoclearbysimplydisconnectingandreconnectinganelectricalplug,examineeachdisconnectedplugforthefollowing.

BeforeDisconnection:

• Iftestingwithavoltmeter,thevoltageacrossaconnectorshould bevirtuallybatteryvolts(unlessaresistorisfittedinthecircuit).Ifthereisanoticeablechange,suspectfaulty/dirtyconnections.

WhenDisconnectingaConnector:

• Checkforasecuritydevicethatmustbereleasedbeforetheconnectorcanbeseparated.E.G.barb,hookandeyeetc.

WhenInspectingaConnector:

• Checkthattheindividualpinshavenotbeenbent.

• Checkfordampness/dirt/corrosion.

• Checkcablesforsecurity.

• Checkcablepinjointsfordamage.

WhenConnectingaConnector.

• Ensurethereisno dirtaroundtheconnector/seal.

• Pushtogethersquarelytoensureterminalsarenotbent orincorrectlylocated.

• Pushthetwohalvestogetherpositively.

DisconnectionofECMconnectorsNote:

• TwodifferentsizedconnectorsareusedintheECM,whichensurescorrectconnectionisalwaysmade.

1.Pressdown onthelocking deviceandgentlypullbackontheconnectortoreleaseitfromtheECM.
