SystemDiagnostics

Theenginemanagementsystemhasanon-boarddiagnosticsfeaturewhichallowsservicetechnicianstoretrievestoreddatafromtheECMusing aTriumphservicetool.Fulldetailsofthetool'soperationandhowtointerprettheresultsaregivenelsewhereinthissection.

Thetoolisconnectedtothemotorcycleusingadedicateddiagnosticplugsituatedbeneaththeseats.Byusingadedicatedplug,noelectricalconnectorsassociatedwiththesystemaredisturbed,reducingpotentialconnectordamage.

Thetoolallowstheusertoretrievedataassociatedwiththesystemsensorsandactuators,testvariouscomponentfunctions,readbuilddataandmakeminoradjustmentstotheset-upofthesystem.Thedataandtestsavailablearedescribedonthefollowingpages.

On-boardFaultDetectionSystem

Theon-boarddiagnosticsystemhastwostagestofaultdetection.Whenafaultisdetected,theDSM(DiagnosticStatusManager)raisesaflagtoindicatethatafaultispresentandincrementsacounter.Thecounterchecksthenumberofinstancesthatthefaultisnoted.Forexample,ifthereisafaultinthecrankshaftpositionsensor,thecounterwillincrementitscounteachtimethecrankshaftturnsthrough360°,providedthefaultisstillpresent.

Whenthecountbegins,thefaultisdetectedbutnotconfirmed.Ifthefaultcontinuestobedetectedandthecountreachesapre-determinedthreshold,thefaultbecomesconfirmed.Ifthefaultisanemissionsrelatedfaultoraseriousmalfunctionaffectingengineperformance,aDTC(DiagnosticTroubleCode)andfreeze-framedatawillbeloggedintheECM'smemoryandtheMIL (MalfunctionIndicatorLamp)onthemotorcycleinstrumentpanelisilluminated.Onceafaultisconfirmed,thenumberofwarm-upcyclesmadebytheengineiscounted.Ifthefaultclears,thewarm-upcyclecounterwillextinguishtheMIL(MalfunctionIndicatorLamp)atapredeterminedcount,anderasetheDTCandfreezeframedatafromtheECMmemoryatanother(higher)count.

Asinglewarm-upcycleisdeemedtohavetakenplacewhenthefollowingcriteriahavebeenmet:

  • Thecoolanttemperaturemustberaisedto72°Cormore.

  • Thecoolanttemperaturemusthaverisenby23°Cormorefromitsstarttemperature,when72°Cisreached.

  • Acontrolledpower-downsequencemusttakeplace.

Note:

    • Whenafaulthasbeenrectified,theMILwillremainilluminateduntilsufficientnon­faultwarm-upcycleshavetakenplacetoturnitoff.The MILwillbeimmediatelyextinguishedif,afterfirstrectifyingthefault,theOTC(diagnostictroublecode)thatcausedtheMILilluminationiserasedfromtheECMmemoryusingtheTriumphdiagnostictool.

Note:

    • Inmostcases,whenafaultisdetected,theenginemanagementsystemwillreverttoa'limp-home'mode.Inthismode,theenginewillstillfunctionthoughtheperformanceandfueleconomymaybemarginallyaffected.Insomecases,theridermaynot noticeanyappreciabledifferencefromnormaloperation.

DescribedonthefollowingpagesistherangeofinformationwhichcanberetrievedfromtheECM'smemoryandtheadjustmentswhichcanbeperformedusingtheTriumphservicediagnostictool.
