SystemActuators

In responsetosignalsreceived fromthesensors,theECMcontrolsanddirectsmessagestoaseriesofelectronicandelectro-mechanicalactuators.Thefunctionandlocationoftheactuatorsisgivenbelow.

  • Primarythrottlesteppermotor-situatedatthefrontofthethrottlebodies.Theprimarythrottlestepperactuatesacam/leverwhichcausesvariationsintheclosedthrottleposition.Althoughusedprimarilytoensuretargetidlespeedismaintained,italso increasesthrottleopeningwhentheengineiscold.

  • Second throttlesteppermotor-situatedbetweenthethrottlebodiesfornumbersone andtwocylinders.InresponsetodirectionfromtheECM,thesecondthrottlesteppermotormovesthesecondthrottlespindletothepositiondirectedbytheECM.Thesecondbutterflyoptimisesenginetorquebymaintainingintakeairflowspeed.Itdoesnotactasachokeforcoldstartpurposes.

  • Canisterpurgevalve(Californiamodelsonly)

-situatedinthevapourreturnlinebetweenthecarboncanisterandthethrottlebodies.Thepurgevalvecontrolsthereturnofvapourwhichhasbeenstored inthe carboncanisterduringtheperiodwhentheengineisswitchedoff.Thevalveis'pulsed'bytheECM togivecontrolovertherateatwhichthecanisterispurged.

  • Injectors-locatedinthethrottlebodyassembly.Theengineisfittedwiththreeinjectors.Thespraypatternoftheinjectorsisfixedbutthelengthoftimeeachinjectorcanremainopenisvariableaccordingtooperatingconditions.ThedurationofeachinjectioniscalculatedbytheECMusingdatareceivedfromthevarioussensorsinthesystem.

  • Ignitioncoils-mountedonabracket, abovethecamcover.Therearethreecoilsfitted,oneforeachpairofsparkplugs.TheECMcontrolsthepointatwhichthecoilsareswitchedonandoff.Incalculating theswitch-on time,theECMallowssufficienttimeforthecoilstochargetoalevelwhereasparkcanbeproduced.Thecoilsareswitchedoffatthepointofignition,thetimingofwhichisoptimisedforgoodengineperformance.

  • Falldetectionswitch-situatedbehindthelefthandsidecover.ThefalldetectionswitchwilldetectifthemotorcycleisonitssideandwillcutpowertotheECMimmediately.Thispreventstheenginefromrunningandthefuelpump fromdeliveringfuel.Intheeventofafall,theswitchisresetbyreturningthebiketoanuprightpositionandswitchingtheignitionoffthenbackonagain.

  • Main powerrelay-situatedbehindthelefthandsidecover.Whentheignitionisswitchedon,themainpowerrelayispowereduptoprovideastablevoltagesupplyfortheECM.

  • Fuelpump-locatedinsidethefueltank.Theelectricpumpdeliversfuelintothefuelsystem,viaapressureregulator,ataconstant3barpressure.Thepumpisruncontinuouslywhentheengineisoperatingandisalsorunbrieflywhentheignitionisfirstswitchedontoensurethat3barisavailabletothesystemassoonastheengineiscranked.Fuelpressureiscontrolledby aregulatoralsosituatedinsidethefueltank.

  • Coolingfan-locatedbehindtheradiator.TheECMcontrolsswitchingonandoffofthecoolingfaninresponsetoasignalreceivedfromthecoolanttemperaturesensor.Whenthecoolanttemperaturerisestoalevelwherethecoolingeffectofnaturalairflowisinsufficient,thecoolingfanisturnedonbytheECM.Whenthecoolanttemperaturefallssufficiently,theECMturnsthecoolingfanoff.Thefanonlybecomesoperationalwhentheengineisrunning.Itwillnotoperate atanyothertime.
