Cleaningcomponents
Ahighflash-pointsolventisrecommendedtoreducefirehazard.
Alwaysfollowcontainerdirectionsregardingtheuseofanysolvent.
Alwaysusetherecommendedcleaningagentorequivalent.
Donotusedegreasingequipmentforcomponentscontainingitemswhichcouldbedamagedbytheuseofthisprocess.Wheneverpossible,cleancomponentsandtheareasurroundingthembeforeremoval.Alwaysobservescrupulouscleanlinesswhencleaningdismantledcomponents.
Lubrication
Themajorityofenginewearoccurswhiletheengineiswarmingupandbeforealltherubbingsurfaceshaveanadequatelubricationfilm.Duringassembly,oilorgrease(whicheverismoresuitable)shouldbeappliedtoanyrubbingsurface,whichhaslostitslubricationfilm.Oldgreaseanddirty oilshouldbecleanedoff.Thisisbecauseusedlubricantswillhavelostsomelubricationqualitiesandmaycontainabrasiveforeignparticles.
Userecommendedlubricants.Someoilsandgreasesinparticularshouldbeusedonlyincertainapplicationsandmaybeharmfulifusedinanapplicationforwhichtheyarenotintended.Thismanualmakesreferencetomolybdenumdisulphidegreaseintheassemblyofcertainengineandchassisparts.Alwayscheckmanufacturerrecommendationsbeforeusingsuchspeciallubricants.
Jointsandjointfaces
AssemblejointsdryunlessotherwisespecifiedinthisManual.
Ifgasketsand/orjointingcompoundisrecommendedforuse;removealltracesofoldjointingmaterialpriortoreassembly.Donotuseatoolwhichwilldamagethejointfacesandsmoothoutanyscratchesorburrsonthe jointfacesusinganoilstone.Donotallowdirtorjointingmaterialtoenteranytappedholes.
Gaskets,0-rings
Donotre-useagasketor0-ringonceithasbeeninservice.Thematingsurfacesaroundthegasketshould befreeofforeignmatterandperfectlysmoothtoavoidoilor compressionleaks.
Liquidgasket,non-permanentlockingagent
Followmanufacturer'sdirectionsforcleaningandpreparingsurfaceswherethesecompoundswillbeused.Applysparinglyasexcessiveamountsofsealermayblockengineoilpassagesandcauseseriousdamage.
Priortoreassembly,blowthroughanypipes,channelsorcrevices withcompressedair.
ScrewThreads
Metricthreads toISOstandardareused.
Damagednuts,boltsandscrewsmustalwaysbediscarded.
Castellatednutsmustnotbeslackenedbacktoacceptasplit-pin,exceptinthoserecommendedcaseswhenthisformspartofanadjustment.
Donotallowoilorgreasetoenterblindthreadedholes.Thehydraulicactiononscrewingintheboltorstudcouldsplitthehousing.
Alwaystightenanutorbolttotherecommendedtorquefigure.Damagedorcorrodedthreadscanaffectthetorquereading.
Unlessspecified,threadedfixingsmustalwaysbefitteddry(nolubrication).
